Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and

light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of
his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold,
the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the
burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his
tongue as a devouring fire:

Rain
provides respite in Manitoba wildfire fight, but evacuation order still
in place-By The Canadian Press-Published: May 17, 2025 at 4:29PM EDT
LAC
DU BONNET — Evacuation orders remain in place for the Rural
Municipality of Lac du Bonnet as crews continue to battle wildfires in
eastern Manitoba. While recent rainfall has helped, officials say the
state of local emergency remains in place in the community where a fire
destroyed 28 homes and cottages and left two people dead earlier this
week.Local officials issued an update on social media early Saturday
saying they were hopeful they could start planning for re-entry into the
evacuated areas as early as that day.But officials added that re-entry
was not yet recommended by the province’s wildfire service, and another
update later Saturday said the evacuation orders have not changed.Lac du
Bonnet Emergency Management says a recommendation to return will only
come when the fire is under control and the safety of residents can be
assured. There were roughly 20 other fires burning in Manitoba as of
Friday, prompting the province to close some national parks.“Our top
priority remains the safety of our residents, which is why the mandatory
evacuation remains in place,” the municipality’s emergency management
organization posted on Saturday afternoon.“We will not risk allowing
residents to return back into homes that are adjacent to the fire and
have a second evacuation.”The post noted that over 200 Manitoba Hydro
poles were lost in the area and that roads have been damaged, which has
made it difficult for the utility to make repairs. The municipality also
said it lacks resources to assess every property or tell residents
whether their properties have sustained damage. It said it can’t escort
residents into the area to view their properties.“We have evacuated over
1,000 households and cannot take photos of individual properties. When
the evacuation order is lifted, you will be able to assess your
property, and report any damage to your insurance company,” the post
stated, while thanking residents for their patience.“All resources are
dedicated to resolving the fire situation so that we can declare the
area safe and get you home.”This report by The Canadian Press was first

Evacuations and containment efforts continue as wildfires burn across Manitoba.By Eddie Huband-Posted May 17, 2025 5:36 pm.
Recent
rainfall and cooler temperatures have offered some relief, but multiple
out-of-control wildfires continue to pose threats across Manitoba. One
of the most serious fires is burning just six kilometres from Lac du
Bonnet and has grown to approximately 4,000 hectares. A residential
evacuation order remains in place, and two lives were lost earlier this
week.“There’s still concerns about the northeast and northwest end, as
well as the southeast end,” said Loren Schinkle, reeve of the RM of Lac
du Bonnet. “There’s a lot of hotspots in that area. They have crews in
there working on those. Obviously Mother Nature has assisted us a little
bit with precipitation and cooler temperatures making it easier for
those working on the front lines.”Schinkle says crews are working to
improve containment efforts.“They’re trying to set up some further
containment inside the contained area with some equipment in there
because there’s some flare-ups on the peat moss side that are burning,”
he said. “And because of that they won’t allow us to modify the
evacuation zones, so we just ask for continued patience from our
residents so we can ensure the proper safety is in place on their end,
and we can get them back in there as soon as possible.”To the northeast,
another fire—estimated at 100,000 hectares—is now just one kilometre
away from Bird River. Highway 315 is closed and blocked at Bird River,
and Highway 314 is closed at Bissett. The Bernic Lake mine has been
evacuated, and all residents in impacted areas have been relocated.
Value protection is being established where it is safe for crews to
operate.Meanwhile, a separate fire near the Ontario border, also around
4,000 hectares in size, is affecting Whiteshell Provincial Park. That
fire began in Ontario but has crossed into Manitoba. An evacuation order
remains in effect.Another fire near Peguis First Nation is being
reported at 316 hectares and is now classified as under control. In
total, there are 16 active wildfires burning across the province. For the
latest updates and official information, residents are encouraged to
visit the provincial government’s wildfire information page.“We just ask
for continued patience from our residents so we can ensure the proper
safety is in place on their end, and we can get them back in there as
soon as possible,” said Schinkle.
Dust storm covers Chicago with
near-zero visibility conditions-The dust storm warning was the first
issued by the National Weather Service for the city.May 16, 2025, 9:50
PM EDT-By Phil Helsel
A dust storm that brought visibility to
near zero swept across the Chicago area Friday, prompting the first dust
storm warning ever issued to the city, officials said. The “wall of
dust” that struck the South Side and other areas occurred on a day in
which high winds of 50 mph were forecast, and as a storm system caused
at least one deadly tornado in Missouri. The dust came in from the south,
moving north, around 6:40 p.m. with winds of up to 60 mph, the National
Weather Service said.Midway Airport recorded a gust of 59 mph, the
weather agency said, and visibility was reduced to around a
quarter-mile.The phenomenon is unusual for Chicago. The dust storm
warning issued by the weather service was the first ever for Chicago
itself — although one was issued on May 7, 2023, that was away from the
metropolitan area.“Well that was.....something,” the weather service’s
Chicago office wrote on X.The dust storm was beginning to ease at 7:40
p.m. local time, the weather service said. Visibility ranges were still
decreased but were beginning to improve.Phil Helsel is a reporter for

At least 27 dead as tornadoes and thunderstorms strike
three states-Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear reported 18 fatalities in
devastated Polk County. Missouri officials say seven died there, and in
Virginia, two died when trees struck their vehicles.May 18, 2025, 10:47
AM EDT-By Dennis Romero and Viola Flowers
At least 27 people have
perished in severe weather that swept from the lower Midwest to the
South over the weekend, with Missouri and Kentucky suffering the worst
of it, authorities said.Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said the number of
weather-related fatalities — he attributed them to a single tornado
initially believed to have touched down at EF3 strength overnight — had
risen from 14 to 18 by late Saturday afternoon.“We are hard at work this
morning addressing the tragic damage and deaths caused by severe
weather Saturday morning,” Beshear posted Sunday morning on X. “We are
securing emergency housing options and looking into sites for
intermediate housing.”The governor said 17 of the fatalities were in
Laurel County and one was in Pulaski County. One of the deceased was a
Laurel County firefighter, Beshear said.“It has taken far too many
lives,” Beshear said. “Homes that there isn’t a single wall standing.
Homes that have all four walls yet lost the person inside.”The governor
posted Sunday that the Team Kentucky Storm Relief fund would be reaching
out to families of the deceased to cover funeral expenses. As of
Saturday, 10 people remained in critical condition after suffering
weather-related injuries, according to the governor.Survey teams will be
on the ground Monday to collect information for the state to apply for
federal assistance, Beshear posted. Debris removal plans are also in
progress.Relief of dry weather is expected Sunday, with severe storm
risks returning Monday into Tuesday, the National Weather Service (NWS)
predicts. Flash flooding may be possible Tuesday if heavy rain
persists.Officials in Missouri reported seven weather-related fatalities
since Friday, including five in St. Louis County and two in Scott
County. Central Missouri will face another chance of severe
thunderstorms Sunday night into Monday morning, with threats of large
hail and powerful wind.In Virginia, where parts of the state were
subjected to the same system of unstable air, thunderstorms and powerful
winds, two people were killed in separate incidents involving falling
trees that struck vehicles, authorities said. The fatalities were
reported in Fairfax County and in Fort Hunt, the latter along a section
of the George Washington Memorial Parkway that's under the jurisdiction
of the U.S. Park Police.Dry weather is expected in Virginia from Sunday
through early Tuesday, according to NWS.A spokesperson for St. Louis
Children’s Hospital and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri,
said the facilities received over 60 patients in total, with the
children’s facility treating 15 and Barnes-Jewish seeing more than 50.
Two of the patients at Children's Hospital were in critical condition.
All others have been discharged, the spokesperson said on Saturday. Most
of the patients at Barnes-Jewish have been discharged or will be soon,
the spokesperson said.St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer said the severe
weather, including two reported tornadoes in the area on Friday,
affected an estimated 5,000 buildings in the city.Homeland Security
Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement Saturday that she has spoken
with the governors of Missouri, Kentucky and Illinois and offered them
"federal resources and action for the deadly tornadoes and storms.""We
discussed how while emergency management is best led by local
authorities, we reinforced that DHS stands ready to take immediate
action to offer resources and support," Noem said. The NWS Storm
Prediction Center has issued an enhanced risk for severe weather through
central Kansas to Oklahoma on Sunday, where the greatest threat of
tornadoes will be.The National Weather Service said 28 tornadoes were
reported on Friday.A slight risk of excessive rainfall has also been
issued from eastern Kansas and Oklahoma to the Ozark Mountains of
Missouri and Arkansas through Monday morning, the agency said.More than
49,000 utility customers in Missouri and 26,000 in Kentucky were without
power on Sunday, according to utility tracker PowerOutage.us, with
power returning to many residents since Saturday.Dennis Romero.

At least 21 people were killed
when severe weather, including possible tornadoes, swept through parts
of Missouri and Kentucky from Friday into Saturday morning, authorities
said.Fourteen were killed in Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear said on X
Saturday morning. "Sadly, this number is expected to grow as we receive
more information," he added. The state's National Guard was activated in
response to Friday's storms.Laurel County, Kentucky, Sheriff John Root
reported "numerous severe injuries." He said a tornado touched down late
Friday night and that the search for survivors continued. In Missouri,
five were killed in St. Louis County and two others in Scott County,
according to officials. At least 38 people were reported injured in the
city of St. Louis, Mayor Cara Spencer said in a news briefing Saturday
morning. That number is expected to increase, officials said.Spencer
also said severe weather has affected around 5,000 buildings in the
city."Our inspectors are out there making sure that we are, first and
foremost, assessing the damage to be condemning buildings, and moving
through demolition and other security as we go through this," Spencer
said at the briefing.Spencer described the devastation seen around the
city as "tremendous.""I would describe this as one of the worst storms,
absolutely," she said. "The devastation is truly heartbreaking, and
let's not forget, people have lost their lives."A spokesperson for St.
Louis Children's Hospital and Barnes-Jewish Hospital said the facilities
received over 60 patients in total, with the children's facility
treating 15 and Barnes-Jewish seeing around 50 to 60, who were injured
as a result of severe weather. Three of the children's hospital patients
have been admitted, with two in critical condition, while all others
have been discharged. Some of those at Barnes-Jewish were admitted but
most have been discharged or will be discharged soon, the spokesperson
said.Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson said severe weather hit about 20 square
blocks of the city.St. Louis police spokesperson Mitch McCoy said
search-and-rescue operations were carried out with the help of the
Missouri State Highway Patrol and surrounding county first
responders."It’s all hands on deck to rescue as many people as we can
and save lives," he told NBC affiliate KSDK of St. Louis Friday. The
station reported that a man was rescued from the rubble of a home after
an hourslong operation. The residence was most likely smashed by a
tornado or potent winds Friday, the station said."Considering the
building collapsed on him, he's doing great," a fire official said after
the man was pulled out.The man had sought shelter in the home and ended
up stuck inside, possibly in a pantry, KSDK said.Coverage from the
region included imagery of a decimated Harlem Tap Room, a historic bar
on the city's north side that has been at the same location for roughly
80 years.A witness who was in the bar told KSDK that a fellow patron's
warning and the establishment's flickering lights led him and others to
move to the rear of the building, which he said likely saved lives. The
energy utility Spire, which serves 1.7 million customers in the region,
said there is "severe damage" to homes. Video of the damage showed
toppled brick walls and downed tree limbs and power lines in the
region. The nearby city of Clayton said its city hall is closed as it
coordinates a response to the severe weather. In Scott County, Sheriff
Derick Wheetley said in a social media post that two people died in a
"devastating tornado" there."The tornado moved from the eastern part of
the county, leaving behind a trail of destruction, with multiple homes
completely lost and areas left unrecognizable," he said.Homeland
Security Secretary Kristi Noem said she spoke to Missouri Gov. Mike
Kehoe, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Kentucky's Beshear "to offer
federal resources and action for the deadly tornadoes and storms"
impacting their states. She said she also left a message for Indiana
Gov. Mike Braun."DHS stands ready to help when a state needs, requests,
and declares an emergency," Noem said in a statement. On Saturday,
Kentucky had more than 99,000 customers in the dark, according to
utility tracker PowerOutage.us, with a further 84,000 across
Missouri.The vortexes were products of a fast-moving low-pressure system
headed east-northeast from its location over parts of Illinois,
Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri, a region under tornado watch until 10
p.m.The cool, winter-like storm is clashing with a heat wave to the
southwest, producing unstable air and eruptions of thunderstorm
activity.Lightning was seen illuminating the night sky above central
Kentucky on Friday in a video circulating on X. It was announced on
Saturday that the Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park in southern Kentucky
will be closed "for the coming days" after it sustained a direct hit
from a tornado Friday night, per the park's spokespeople, who shared
pictures of downed trees.A shelter was opened in Laurel County,
Kentucky, on Saturday for those who had been impacted by severe weather
and needed a place to stay.A Beyoncé concert at Chicago’s open-air
Soldier Field on Thursday was delayed because of the weather. Spectator
video showed a ferocious downpour ahead of the show.Storms on Friday
produced more than 600 preliminary severe weather reports, including 26
potential tornadoes, across five states including Missouri, Illinois,
Kentucky and Indiana, according to NBC News forecasters. Crews with the
National Weather Service's St. Louis field office found at least EF-3
tornado damage, with winds ranging from 136 to 165 mph, in the Fountain
Park and Kingsway East neighborhoods of the city. Surveying efforts are
still ongoing. One EF-0 (65 to 85 mph wind gusts) tornado was confirmed
near Folsom, New Jersey. On Saturday, 20 million across the southern
Plains and New England are at risk of severe weather, with the strongest
storms expected to affect parts of Texas and Oklahoma, where an
enhanced risk is forecast, according to the National Weather Service.
Dallas, Texas; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma; Shreveport, Louisiana;
and Little Rock, Arkansas, are included in the risk area, where
damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes are possible. There is
also a chance of severe weather over parts of the Northeast on Saturday
afternoon, including New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Storms in this area will be capable of producing 65 mph wind gusts,
quarter-sized hail and a tornado.A severe thunderstorm watch is in
effect until 8 p.m. ET for parts of the Northeast, including Syracuse,
New York, and Burlington, Vermont. Storms in this region will be capable
of producing 1.5-inch hail, 65 mph winds and a tornado or two.Sunday’s
severe risk will stay over the Plains, affecting 20 million from
Nebraska to Texas. Wichita and Topeka, Kansas; Dallas; Oklahoma City;
Kansas City, Missouri; and Omaha, Nebraska, will be in the risk zone,
with storms capable of damaging wind gusts, large hail and
tornadoes. This active pattern will continue into Monday, with 26 million
at risk across the Plains and the Midwest, including in Oklahoma City,
Kansas City, Tulsa, Dallas and St. Louis. This risk will continue to
push east as the system shifts, with Tuesday’s risk affecting 26 million
in the Mississippi and Tennessee valleys. Nashville and Memphis,
Tennessee; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Cincinnati, Ohio, are highlighted
for impacts on Tuesday. This multiday threat will also bring heavy rain,
especially over parts of the central Plains. Localized flash flooding
cannot be ruled out through the next three days, as 4 inches or more of
rain will be possible over parts of Missouri and Arkansas.
An
early-season heat wave will bring record temperatures to the Southwest
and Texas-A 'heat dome' will trap hot air and cause some areas to reach
temperatures of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.May 14, 2025, 9:11 AM
EDT-By Denise Chow
An early-season heat wave is set to bake huge
swaths of the country this week, with record or near-record high
temperatures expected across the northern and the southern Plains, the
Southwest and much of central and southern Texas.Temperatures will reach
the 90s in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota on Monday, with
some areas potentially seeing highs in the triple digits, according to
the National Weather Service.Beginning Tuesday, the hottest conditions
will be found in Texas, where temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or
higher will be common for much of the state, the agency said.“Expect
record breaking heat across much of central and southern Texas through
mid-week,” the weather service said Monday in its short-range
forecast. In a series of posts on X, the weather service office in San
Antonio warned that many people will not be acclimated to such extreme
heat so early in the year, increasing the risk of heat-related illness
and death.“Temperatures are forecast to surge above 100 Tuesday, and
some places could approach 110 midweek. Ensure you have access to
cooling and plentiful hydration before the heat arrives,” the office
wrote on X.As the week progresses, heat will build in the central and
the southern Plains and expand through the Southeast and into
Florida.Cities that could set new daily temperature records this week
include Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston in Texas; Oklahoma City;
Shreveport, Louisiana; Charleston, South Carolina; and Tallahassee,
Jacksonville and Orlando in Florida. The unseasonably hot temperatures
are caused by a strong high-pressure ridge parked over much of the
country and centered over Texas. These kinds of “heat domes” essentially
trap hot air over a region, sometimes driving up temperatures for days
on end.Southern California saw record highs over the weekend, with
temperatures peaking at 103 in downtown Los Angeles, breaking a record
of 99 set in 1988, according to the weather service.Climate change is
increasing the frequency, duration and intensity of heat waves around
the world, studies have shown. Scientists are anticipating a hot summer
again this year, after two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) that
shattered global temperature records. The back-to-back broken records are
part of an alarming warming trend that has long been predicted by
climate change models. The planet’s 10 hottest years since 1850 have all
occurred in the past decade, according to the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration.Denise Chow.
China, EU suspend Brazil chicken imports over bird flu.
Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil, May 16 (AFP) May 16, 2025-China and the European
Union have suspended imports of chicken meat from Brazil, the world's
biggest exporter of the commodity, after an outbreak of bird flu on a
farm in the South American country, officials said Friday.China is the
main importer of Brazilian chicken, with 562,000 tons in 2024, or more
than 10 percent of the total, according to Brazil's ABPA meat
association. The EU, for its part, imported more than 231,000 tons of
chicken last year, totaling 4.5 percent of Brazil's exports of the
meat."To respect the agreements made with China and the European Union,
exports are restricted" from Brazil as a whole -- in China's case for 60
days, Brazil's agriculture ministry said in a statement. An outbreak of a
new strain of "highly pathogenic avian influenza" (HPAI) has been
confirmed on a farm in Montenegro in the southern state of Rio Grande do
Sul, the ministry said. While China and the EU suspended imports from
Brazil as a whole, other countries may place restrictions on the
affected region only. The ministry said the virus could not be
transmitted to humans "by the consumption of poultry meat or
eggs."Infections in humans can cause severe disease with a high
mortality rate, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).It says
human cases detected so far are mostly linked to people who had close
contact with infected birds and other animals, or contaminated
environments. The virus does not appear to move easily from person to
person, according to the WHO.Brazil says containment and eradication
measures have been put in place. The H5N1 bird flu was first detected in
1996 in China, but since 2020, the number of outbreaks among birds has
surged, and an increasing number of mammal species has been affected. In
the United States this year, tens of millions of laying chickens have
been culled, resulting in an egg shortage.A three-year-old girl last
month became Mexico's first human fatality from H5N1.

DR DOCTORION-ANGEL OF THE MIDEAST
"The
angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces
because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United

FIRST ANGEL: ASIA
But
the angel said: "Millions will die in China and in India. Nation will
be against nation, brother against brother. Asians will fight each
other. Nuclear weapons shall be used, killing millions."Twice I heard
the words, "Catastrophic! Catastrophic!"Then the angel said, "Financial
crisis will come to Asia. I will shake the world."I was trembling while
the angel was speaking.
SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that
the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in
harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel and
the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few split
seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have refused
me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one
another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the
Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of
Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full
of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear
weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere.
Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these
words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come."
Gaza rescuers say children among 33 killed in Israeli strikes.
Gaza
City, Palestinian Territories, May 18 (AFP) May 18, 2025-Gaza's civil
defence agency said Israeli air strikes on Sunday killed at least 33
people, more than half of them children, a day after Israel announced an
expanded military campaign in the besieged territory.Israel's military
has said the expansion of its operations is aimed at "achieving all the
war's objectives" including releasing hostages and "the defeat of
Hamas".The intensified assault comes as international concern has
mounted over worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza due to an Israeli
aid blockade since March 2.Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told
AFP on Sunday that 22 people were killed and at least 100 others wounded
in a predawn attack on tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in
Al-Mawasi, in the southern Gaza Strip.AFPTV footage showed people
sifting through the wreckage of ruined shelters and rescuers treating
the wounded. At a hospital in nearby Khan Yunis city, young men mourned
over the shrouded bodies of loved ones laid out on the ground outside. In
northern Gaza, Bassal said seven people were killed in a strike on a
house in Jabalia, while the Al-Awda hospital in the same area reported
damage.Four more deaths were recorded in the central area of Al-Zawayda
and in Khan Yunis in the south, according to Bassal. He said that the
"series of violent Israeli air strikes" across Gaza overnight and in the
early morning resulted in a total of "at least 33 martyrs, more than
half of whom were children".There was no immediate comment from the
Israeli military.- 'Ceasefire, now' -The announcement of Israel's
stepped-up campaign drew international criticism on Saturday.UN chief
Antonio Guterres, addressing an Arab League summit in Baghdad, said he
was "alarmed" at the escalation and called for "a permanent ceasefire,
now".The summit's final statement urged the international community "to
exert pressure to end the bloodshed".Italy urged Israel to stop the
strikes, while Germany said it was "deeply concerned". European Council
President Antonio Costa said he was "shocked by the news from
Gaza".Israel resumed its operations in the territory on March 18, ending
a two-month truce in the war.In Tel Aviv, demonstrators took to the
streets on Saturday to protest against Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu's government and demand it strike a deal to secure the release
of the remaining hostages."Instead of bringing them all home by
agreeing to the deal that is on the table, Netanyahu is dragging us into
a needless political war that will lead to the death of the hostages
and soldiers," said protester Zahiro Shahar Mor, nephew of slain hostage
Avraham Munder.Of the 251 hostages taken during Hamas's October 7, 2023
attack that triggered the war, 57 remain in Gaza, including 34 the
military says are dead.- Doha talks -Senior Hamas official Taher al-Nunu
said Saturday that new talks on ending the war had begun in Doha
"without any preconditions from either side".Previous negotiations
mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States failed to secure a
breakthrough, but the talks have been ongoing.Netanyahu's Likud party
said he had been "in continuous contact" with the Israeli delegation and
had ordered the negotiators "to remain in Doha for the time
being".Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir
argued against a deal, saying "now is not the time to pull back".Israel
has faced increasing pressure to lift its aid blockade, as UN agencies
warn of critical shortages of food, clean water, fuel and
medicine.Marwan Sultan, director of the Indonesian Hospital in northern
Gaza, said that the situation there was "catastrophic" amid nearby
attacks and "a severe shortage" of supplies. On Sunday, the health
ministry in Hamas-run Gaza accused Israel of laying siege to the
hospital, where it said "a state of panic and confusion is prevailing...
severely hampering the provision of emergency medical care".Hamas's
October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the
Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on
official figures. The Gaza health ministry said that at least 3,131
people have been killed since Israel resumed strikes on March 18, taking
the war's overall toll to 53,272.
Until we break the enemy': IDF
chief Zamir speaks to soldiers on expanded Gaza op-"We cannot go back

hostages and the defeat of Hamas.”By JERUSALEM POST STAFF-MAY 18, 2025

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir toured the northern
Gaza Strip on Sunday and held a situational assessment with senior
officers following the approval of Operation Gideon's Chariots. He was
joined by Southern Command head Maj.-Gen. Yaron Finkelman, 162nd
Division commander Brig.-Gen. Itzik Cohen and other top
commanders.During the visit, Zamir met with troops from the 401st
Brigade operating in the area and gave his approval for continued combat
operations.“We launched Operation Gideon’s Chariots over the weekend,”
said Zamir. “We will continue until we break the enemy’s fighting
capability—until we defeat it wherever we operate. We cannot go back to
October 7. There are two main objectives before us: the return of the
hostages and the defeat of Hamas.”Zamir noted that the army would
support the government’s efforts to reach a hostage deal.“The IDF will
allow flexibility for the government to promote any hostage deal,” he
said. “A hostage deal is not a halt—it’s an achievement. We are acting
toward that.”He ended by praising the troops for their resolve.“Keep
operating, fulfill your missions, and strike the enemy,” he said. “I am
aware of the gravity of this moment and the challenges ahead. I hold you
in high regard—I trust you.”IDF begins Operation Gideon's ChariotsThe
IDF announced on Sunday that it had already, over the weekend, increased
the pace of expanding the Gaza invasion, including killing dozens of
Hamas terrorists and striking 670 Hamas targets.Over the weekend,
Israeli forces invaded and started to take control over large portions
of northern and southern Gaza, which they had not entered in such large
numbers of forces since 2024.IDF attacks focused on Hamas forces, their
weapons, tunnels, and anti-tank missile crews. Yonah Jeremy Bob

Renewed Gaza invasion endangers
remaining hostages, families warn-The forum's statement cites a position
paper that concludes that the resumption of the fighting threatens the
safety of the hostages still alive and increases the difficulty of
recovering the dead.By JERUSALEM POST STAFF-MAY 18, 2025 18:41
The
IDF's new Operation Gideon's Chariot poses an extreme threat to the 58
remaining hostages, the Hostage Families Forum said on Sunday. The
statement was issued shortly after the military's announcement that had
increased their expansion of the Gaza invasion over the weekend. The
military has struck 670 Hamas targets, killing dozens of terrorists in
the process. The forum's statement sourced a position paper by Prof.
Hagai Levine, Head of the Hostage Families Forum health team, and former
Mossad director, Tamir Pardo, which states that the resumption of the
fighting threatens the safety of living hostages and increases the
difficulty of recovering the dead hostages' bodies, as it may no longer
be possible to recover their remains."The living hostages face immediate
mortal danger, and we risk losing the deceased forever. If we continue
this way, we will lose both the living and the dead," said Levine.
"Israel can now choose life and bring back all the hostages. This is the
moment to decide whether to save lives or abandon them."Citing the
words of the freed hostages-The paper also sourced testimonies from
freed hostages who described their treatment by their captors as
worsening following military strikes. This includes less food provided
to them and enduring physical abuse. It also concludes that the
condition of living hostages will worsen both mentally, due to feelings
of abandonment and prolonging of captivity, and physically, due to the
difficult environmental conditions and hostile treatment from Hamas
terrorists. The paper also describes the hostages' sense of abandonment
being intensified when they realize that some of their fellow captives
were released while they are still held in the Gaza Strip. Physical harm
to them includes structural collapse, toxic cases, and treatment by
Hamas captors.A New York Times report from March stated that 41 hostages
were murdered while in captivity during the fighting.Yonah Jeremy Bob

Articles of Faith': Faithful to
tradition, open to complexity - book review-A recurring theme in
Articles of Faith is the delicate balance between upholding rabbinic
authority while acknowledging the realities of a post-modern, digitally
saturated world.By RABBI REUVEN CHAIM KLEIN-MAY 18, 2025 18:02
In
an era where ideological polarization often drowns out thoughtful
discourse, Rabbi Gil Student’s book Articles of Faith emerges as a
beacon of intellectual integrity and nuanced traditionalism. This
meticulously curated collection of essays, building on ideas discussed
on his widely read blog Torah Musings (formerly Hirhurim), does far more
than rehash well-trodden arguments. It engages with contemporary Jewish
dilemmas in a manner that is deeply rooted in classical sources and
refreshingly independent of partisan dogma. One of the most striking
features of Rabbi Student’s work is his refusal to be pigeonholed into
any ideological category. While some might attempt to categorize him as
Modern Orthodox or “right-wing,” such labels fail to capture the depth
and independence of his thought. Rabbi Student defies simple ideological
categorization, bridging Modern Orthodox and Yeshivish worlds without
fully belonging to either.Challenging mainstream ultra-Orthodox
positions-The author’s intellectual independence is evident in his
willingness to challenge mainstream ultra-Orthodox positions when he
believes them to be misguided, such as his robust defense of Rabbi Natan
Slifkin during the so-called “Slifkin Affair.” Similarly, his critique
of the 2012 anti-Internet asifah (“rabbinic gathering”) reveals a
thinker who understands that rabbinic bans are not the solution to the
challenges of technology.
Coalition backs bill to label Qatar
‘terror-supporting,’ amid hostage talks in Doha-Legislation would bar
Gulf state from serving as mediator in talks between Israel and third
parties — but allows government to make exceptions-By Nava Freiberg and
ToI Staff Today, 8:08 pm-MAY 18,25
The Ministerial Committee for
Legislation on Sunday advanced a bill to designate Qatar a
“terror-supporting state,” citing the controversial Gulf country’s
support for Hamas, Hezbollah and other terror groups. The bill was
approved amid the ongoing, so-called “Qatargate” scandal, in which
several of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top aides are accused of
having worked for Qatar to shift public opinion in Israel. It also comes
as Israeli negotiators are in Doha, attempting to reach a hostage deal
with the Hamas terror group, whose leadership has long been hosted
there. The legislation, brought by Likud MKs Moshe Saada and Dan Illouz,
Otzma Yehudit MK Yitzhak Kroizer and Religious Zionism MK Michal
Woldiger, has been considered several times over the last year. The
Ministerial Committee on Legislation, though not a formal part of the
legislative process, is a way for the government to determine which
bills it will back. The proposed legislation now awaits its preliminary
reading in the Knesset. If passed, it would establish a legal category of
“terror-supporting states” for the first time, with its preamble
explicitly naming Qatar as the world’s leading financier of
terrorism.Any nation given “terror-supporting” status would be subject
to restrictions similar to those imposed on enemy states, including bans
on donations, trade and diplomatic processes with Israel. The proposed
law would also prevent Israel from allowing a “terror-supporting state”
to be involved in any negotiations between Israel and a third party.
However, this would not necessarily prevent Qatar from mediating on the
issue of the Gaza hostages, since a subsection of the bill determines
that “the Ministerial Committee for National Security Affairs may
determine that a specific terror-supporting state shall be exempt from
this restriction.”Qatar is one of the states mediating the talks, though
Israeli officials have publicly blamed Doha for Hamas not accepting
recent compromise proposals. The bill has reached the Ministerial
Committee for Legislation two separate times — once at the end of 2024,
and once in January — but according to a Channel 12 report citing
minutes from the meetings, the National Security Council blocked it at
the request of Prime Minister’s Office officials, while citing
opposition from the security establishment. The National Security Council
said at the time that it did not oppose the legislation, and that, on
the contrary, it supported it. The PMO called the Channel 12 report
“fake news,” and said the bill was being “seriously considered.”The PMO
is currently embroiled in the so-called “Qatargate” scandal, in which
several of Netanyahu’s top aides are suspected of taking money from the
Gulf state in exchange for public relations work while working for
Netanyahu, in the process committing multiple offenses.Netanyahu has
also come under criticism for allowing Qatar to fund the Hamas-run
Strip, and even dispatching officials to ensure the payments continued,
in the years before the October 7, 2023, attack that started the ongoing
war. Some reports — rejected by the prime minister — have alleged that
he ignored intelligence that the funds were going to the terror group’s
military wing. The preamble to the bill approved Sunday alleges that
Qatar — “acting as a wolf in sheep’s clothing” — has, “in addition to
its direct support for terror organizations,” also “invested more than
$1 trillion around the world with the goal of advancing global Jihad,
through ‘donations’ to campuses in the US, support for sports teams,
[and] investments in leading lobbying groups in the US.”The Gulf state
has done so, the bill says, “with the goal of directing public opinion,
in the US and globally, against Israel and against Jews.”Recent
investigations — in the wake of the emirate’s plan to donate a plane for
US President Donald Trump’s use — have outlined Qatar’s billion-dollar
investments in American educational institutions, its retention of
dozens of lobbying firms in Washington, and its personal relationships
and business ties to members of Trump’s inner circle. The Gulf state also
funds the Hamas-friendly Al Jazeera network, which broadcasts to
hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. The Trump administration has
praised Qatar’s role in hostage talks and in the Middle East generally.
The US president visited the state at the end of his Mideast tour last
week, which did not include Israel, and lauded its investment in a US
air base, as well as its recently announced deals with American
companies and defense contractors.
Netanyahu says Qatar
negotiators also discussing end to Gaza war if Hamas disarms-PM shifts

Israel’s negotiation team in Qatar was
exhausting “every possibility” for a deal to free the hostages,
including a framework that would consider an end to the war, the Prime
Minister’s Office said Sunday, indicating a shift in position by Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Netanyahu has until now insisted that the
team would only negotiate on the basis of the US special envoy Steve
Witkoff’s proposal for a short-term ceasefire and limited hostage
exchange. However, in a statement, the PMO said that the team was now
working toward the possibility of either Witkoff’s proposal, or an
agreement to end the war through a comprehensive release of all hostages
in Gaza and the complete surrender and exile of Hamas.“Under the prime
minister’s direction, even at this hour, the negotiating team in Doha is
working to exhaust every possibility for a deal — whether according to
the Witkoff outline or within the framework of ending the war, which
would include the release of all hostages, the exile of Hamas terrorists
and the disarmament of the Gaza Strip,” the statement said.Talks are

in Gaza aimed at seizing most of the Strip. The fighting was likely to
significantly expand should the talks fail.“Thanks to [Netanyahu’s]
policy of exerting military and diplomatic pressure, the government has
so far succeeded in bringing home 197 hostages, and is doing everything
possible to return the 58 remaining captives,” the PMO said.Meanwhile,
an Israeli official told Ynet: “We are giving Hamas a chance to come
back from the brink before we take the drastic action in Gaza. We may
reach a deal after the fighting, but the conditions will be less
favorable for Hamas, so it would be better for them to release our
hostages now and reach a deal.”Israel has consistently said that the war
will not end without the destruction of Hamas as a military and
governing power. In recent talks, Netanyahu has insisted on only
agreeing to a temporary ceasefire of roughly 45 days, which would begin
with Hamas releasing about 10 hostages. However, in the past, he has
floated the willingness to end the war if Hamas surrenders and
disarms.Hamas has indicated a willingness to give up power in Gaza, but
has so far refused to give up its weapons. Before addressing the
negotiations in Qatar, the PMO statement began by criticizing former
Israeli hostage negotiator, Brig. Gen. (res.) Oren Setter, who resigned
from the team in October and in a February interview accused Netanyahu
of missing two opportunities last year for a hostage-ceasefire deal with
Hamas. In an interview with the Kan public broadcaster, Setter said that
he saw an opportunity, under the current combined military and
diplomatic pressure, to reach a comprehensive deal for the return of all
hostages, but was “concerned it’s going to be missed — that once again,
we’ll end up with a partial agreement.”Setter “undermined government
policy through deliberate leaks and biased briefings from within the
cabinet that harmed the negotiations, endangered our hostages and echoed
Hamas’s false propaganda,” wrote the PMO, reiterating its February
denial of his statements.“His claims that an agreement could have been
reached earlier are completely baseless. As senior American officials
have repeatedly testified, Hamas refused for many months to enter
negotiations and was the sole obstacle to a deal,” the statement
said. The reports come as the IDF significantly ramped up its military
pressure in the Gaza Strip after launching its offensive dubbed
“Gideon’s Chariots,” which will seek to “seize strategic areas” of the
Hamas-run Strip.According to Israeli officials, the operation aims to
seize strategic areas of the Strip, target Hamas, prevent the terror
group from taking control of humanitarian aid supplies, and move
Palestinians from northern to southern Gaza.Gaza’s Hamas-run authorities
reported that widespread Israeli airstrikes have killed over 400 people
since Thursday, including 100 people over Saturday night. The tolls
cannot be verified and do not differentiate between civilians and
fighters.Israel has blocked the entry of medical, food and fuel supplies
into Gaza since the start of March to try to pressure Hamas into
freeing Israeli hostages and has approved plans that could involve
seizing the entire Gaza Strip and controlling aid.Mediators Egypt and
Qatar, backed by the US, began a new round of indirect talks with Hamas
on Saturday. However, sources close to the negotiations told Reuters
there had been no breakthrough.A Hamas official told the news agency:
“Israel’s position is unchanged, they want their prisoners released,
without a commitment to end the war.”However, US hostage envoy Adam
Boehler said Hamas’s release of American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander
last week was a “sign” that the terror group “understands” that it needs
to release hostages “if they want this barrage of attacks to
stop.”Boehler told ‘Fox News Sunday’ that hostage negotiations in Doha
are very “fluid,” denying reports that they were not going well.At the
same time, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who has
been a major opponent of any ceasefire deal, expressed his opposition
to the negotiations in Doha and emphasized that no deal had been reached
in a radio interview: “If we don’t collapse Hamas, if we don’t go to
war until the end, this government has no right to exist.”“If our
hostages don’t eat — there is no reason in the world for us to introduce
humanitarian aid. It’s a mistake to make a deal right now and it’s a
mistake to give humanitarian aid,” he said.Ben Gvir also tweeted: “A
framework to end the war without defeating Hamas will not come to
pass.”Potentially complicating the ceasefire talks further, a series of
Israeli airstrikes last week killed Muhammad Sinwar, the de facto
commander of Hamas in Gaza, according to reports on Sunday that said his
body was found in a Khan Younis tunnel. His brother Yahya Sinwar, the
former Hamas leader in Gaza, was killed last October, and another
brother, Zakaria Sinwar, was reportedly killed in an airstrike
Saturday. The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas led
several thousands of terrorists to invade southern Israel, killing 1,200
people and abducting 251 others.Terror groups in the Gaza Strip are
still holding 58 hostages, including 57 of the 251 abducted on October
7.They include the bodies of at least 35 confirmed dead by the IDF, and
20 are believed to be alive. There are grave concerns for the well-being
of three others, Israeli officials have said. The body of another
soldier killed in 2014, Lt. Hadar Goldin, is still being held by Hamas,
and is counted among the 58 hostages.
Zamir says military to be
flexible to allow for hostage deal-IDF says it has begun ‘broad’ ground
operations as it expands new Gaza offensive-Over 100 Palestinians said
killed; hospitals in north of Strip close amid fighting; Sunday Times
says Israeli plan is to shift Gazans into 3 separate, discrete areas By
Emanuel Fabian,Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 5:10 pm-MAY 18,25
The
Israel Defense Force announced Sunday that it has begun “broad” ground
operations in several areas of the Gaza Strip, as part of the opening
phase of a new major offensive. Palestinian officials reported more than
100 people killed over the past 24 hours in Israeli strikes.“Over the
past day, IDF troops in the Southern Command, both the standing army and
reserves, began a broad ground operation throughout the northern and
southern Gaza Strip, as part of the start of Operation Gideon’s
Chariots,” the military said in a statement.Visiting Gaza on Sunday, IDF
Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said that the military would press
forward with the offensive, but at the same time allow flexibility in
order not to torpedo talks for a hostage deal that are ongoing in
Qatar.“The directive is clear: Defeat the enemy and destroy its
infrastructure wherever we operate,” Zamir said, adding that “the IDF
will allow flexibility for the political echelon to advance any hostage
deal.”“A hostage deal — this is not a halt; it is an achievement,” Zemir
stressed. “We are working toward it.”The IDF said that over the past
week, the Israeli Air Force struck over 670 Hamas targets in Gaza “in
order to disrupt the enemy’s preparations and assist the ground
operation.”The targets included weapons depots, cells of terror
operatives, tunnels and anti-tank launch sites, the army said.So far,
the IDF says troops have killed “dozens of terrorists” and destroyed
terrorist infrastructure above and below ground, “and are now holding
strategic areas in the Strip.”Hospitals and medics in Gaza said that
Israeli strikes across the Strip killed at least 103 people overnight
and into Sunday, bringing the toll in the Strip to more than 400 in the
past week.More than 48 people were killed in airstrikes in and around
the southern city of Khan Younis, some of which hit houses and tents
sheltering displaced people, according to Nasser Hospital. In northern
Gaza, a strike on a home in the built-up Jabaliya refugee camp killed
nine people from a single family, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health
ministry’s emergency services. Another strike on a family’s residence,
also in Jabaliya, killed 10, including seven children and a woman,
according to the civil defense, which operates under the Hamas-run
government.Several fatalities were also reported from strikes in central
Gaza. The figures and nature of the casualties could not be
independently verified, and Hamas does not differentiate between
civilians and combatants in its casualty figures.Israel blames civilian
casualties on Hamas because the terror group is deeply embedded among
civilians, including in hospitals, schools and camps for the displaced,
in addition to building its tunnel network under civilian areas. The
bloodshed comes as Israel ramps up its war against Hamas with a new
offensive named “Gideon’s Chariots.” According to Israeli officials, the
wide operation aims to see the IDF conquer Gaza and retain the
territory, attack Hamas, prevent the terror group from taking control of
humanitarian aid supplies, and move Palestinians from Gaza’s north to
its south. The Hamas-run health ministry said that all public hospitals
in the north of the territory were “out of service” after Israeli forces
besieged the Indonesian Hospital.“The Israeli occupation has
intensified its siege with heavy fire around the Indonesian hospital and
its surroundings, preventing the arrival of patients, medical staff,
and supplies — effectively forcing the hospital out of service,” the
ministry said.“All public hospitals in the North Gaza governorate are
now out of service,” it added.Footage from the Indonesian Hospital
showed patients being evacuated on hospital beds and
wheelchairs.According to reports from Gaza, the patients were
transferred to a nearby hospital, Kamal Adwan, also in Beit Lahiya,
after Israeli forces reportedly surrounded the hospital and opened fire
at it.The IDF has not yet responded to the reports. The war in Gaza began
on October 7, 2023, when Hamas led several thousands of terrorists to
invade southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and abducting 251
others.Israel previously said the new plan is meant to ramp up pressure
on Hamas to agree to a temporary ceasefire on Israel’s terms — one that
would free Israeli hostages held in Gaza but wouldn’t necessarily end
the war. Hamas says it wants a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from
Gaza and a pathway to ending the war as part of any new ceasefire
deal.Hostage talks were ongoing in Qatar with the military poised to
dramatically expand fighting should they fail.Zones of control-According
to a report in London’s Sunday Times, the IDF plans to move civilians
in Gaza into three strips of land separated and bookended by four zones
controlled by the military if a ceasefire is not reached in the coming
days. The British news outlet said it has seen a map that was leaked by
diplomats who were briefed on the proposal.According to the report, the
map shows military areas in the north, center, and south of the
Palestinian enclave, with civilian zones sandwiched in between. The
veracity of the map was neither confirmed nor denied by the IDF to the
newspaper. The report said foreign companies assigned to distribute and
manage humanitarian support, which were also briefed on the plan, said
that if implemented, it would prevent the free movement of Palestinians
between different areas of Gaza. The map also showed up to 12 locations
that appear to be distribution points for humanitarian aid.In an attempt
to get around the Hamas terror group, which Israel says has been
seizing humanitarian aid meant for civilians, Israeli officials have
been closely involved in the establishment of a new organization called
the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), advancing a new initiative where
aid will only be distributed from a small number of sites in southern
Gaza that are secured by American contractors.Aid organizations
currently operating in Gaza have come out strongly against the GHF plan,
arguing that it violates humanitarian principles, forces mass
displacement of Palestinians who aren’t currently living near the
humanitarian zone, ignores vulnerable populations, and doesn’t
adequately address the humanitarian crisis.Aid hasn’t entered Gaza since
March 1, with Israel arguing that sufficient humanitarian assistance
entered the Strip during a six-week ceasefire and that Hamas had been
stealing much of that aid. In recent weeks, though, some officials in
the IDF have begun warning the political echelon that the enclave is on
the brink of starvation.Sinwar brothers said dead-Media outlets in Gaza
reported that Zakaria Sinwar, the brother of former Hamas leader Yahya
Sinwar and of de facto Hamas leader in Gaza, Muhammad Sinwar, was killed
Saturday night in an airstrike in Nuseirat in the central Gaza
Strip.According to the reports, he was killed along with three of his
children in a strike on the tent where they were residing.Sinwar had
worked as a lecturer at the Islamic University in Gaza. The reports come
shortly after Saudi outlet Al-Hadath said that Muhammad Sinwar’s body
was found in a Khan Younis tunnel targeted by Israeli airstrikes last
week.According to the report, the bodies of 10 of Sinwar’s aides were
found with him.It is also reported that there is evidence that the
commander of the Rafah Brigade in Hamas’s military wing, Mohammad
Shabana, was killed in the strike.Israel has not confirmed the deaths of
either Sinwar or Shabana. The strikes on Tuesday targeted an underground
command compound below the European Hospital where Sinwar was believed
to be sheltering. The IDF later bombed the area several more times, in
an apparent attempt to prevent anyone from approaching the tunnel. Most
of Hamas’s leadership has been eliminated by Israel during the ongoing
war.
Terrorism and Extremism
Terrorism and violent
extremism, whether domestic or international are among the major threats
to security and stability. Although the different social sciences,
economics, sociology, and political science have contributed to the
study of violent extremism, the crux of the matter is psychological. It
is the person, after all, that decides to pick up a weapon, don a
suicide belt and risk life for a cause. What motivation prompts
individuals to become violent extremists? What is the role of ideology
in their radicalization? How do people’s networks of family and friends,
contribute to the process?
Papers and book chapters in this section
address these questions and propose theoretical models and empirical
findings that illuminate radicalization and the making of a terrorist.
We also show that violent extremism is one type of extreme human
behavior. Extremism include among others addictions, extreme sports, or
extreme diets. What may be most surprising is that these diverse types
of extremism share a common underlying psychological process. The same
process that can drive a person to become a “sinner”, a violent
terrorist, can drive them to become a “saint” and a committed
humanitarian.

Britain, Germany jointly developing missiles: ministers-by AFP Staff Writers.
Berlin
(AFP) May 15, 2025-Britain and Germany are working together to develop
strike missiles, their defence ministers said Thursday, as Russia's war
rages in Ukraine and European powers seek to reduce dependence on US
weapons."We together will begin co-leading the development of a new
European-developed deep precision strike capability with a range of
2,000 plus kilometres (1,250 miles)," Britain's John Healey said at a
bilateral meeting in Berlin.Germany's Boris Pistorius said work on the
missiles had begun and would be critical for European security."The
current threat situation makes it absolutely clear that we need to close
all capability gaps," Pistorius said. "And we need to do that as
quickly as possible."Europe's governments have looked to establish more
independence of US military technology amid doubts about Washington's
future commitment to Europe's security.Germany's Chancellor Friedrich
Merz said in February that Europe would have to work to achieve "real
independence" from the United States whose leadership now seemed
"largely indifferent" to the fate of Europe. The defence ministers also
pointed to other projects their countries were working on, including
joint procurement of torpedoes and the establishment of a new forum
bringing together defence firms from each nation."European nations in
NATO must do more and step up to strengthen European security," Healey
said.
"The best way to do that is for leading nations like Germany and the UK to do more together."by AFP Staff Writers.
Washington
(AFP) May 14, 2025-The United States on Wednesday unveiled fresh
sanctions against six people and 12 firms -- including several based in
China and Hong Kong -- for their support of Iran's ballistic missile
program. The action follows sanctions on a series of entities and
individuals linked to Iran's oil industry and nuclear program the Trump
administration imposed in recent weeks.Wednesday's sanctions are aimed
at organizations involved in "efforts to help the Iranian regime
domestically source the manufacturing of critical materials needed for
Tehran's ballistic missile program," according to the US Treasury
Department."The United States cannot allow Iran to develop
intercontinental ballistic missiles," US Treasury Secretary Scott
Bessent said in a statement.Tehran's attempts to produce missiles and
components domestically "represents an unacceptable threat to the United
States and the stability of the region," he added. Those sanctioned
include three Chinese nationals -- Qin Jinhua, Qin Dehui, and Wang Chao
-- who work for a China-based firm which has exported carbon fiber
precursor materials to a sanctioned Iranian firm, and another Hong
Kong-based company."Iran remains heavily reliant on China to conduct its
malign activities in the Middle East," US State Department spokesperson
Tammy Bruce said in a statement."This is another example of how the CCP
(Chinese Communist Party) and China-based companies provide key
economic and technical support to Iran and its proxies," she
added.Wednesday's sanctions come a day after the United States announced
fresh sanctions on Iranian oil sales to China, as President Donald
Trump's administration continues its "maximum pressure" campaign against
Tehran while backing ongoing nuclear talks. The sanctions follow similar
designations in recent weeks, at the same time as Washington and Tehran
have stepped up nuclear talks. The two sides held their fourth round of
indirect talks over the weekend, which mark their highest-level contact
since the United States in 2018 pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal.
Iran says ready to rebuild 'mutual trust' with Europe.
Tehran,
May 18 (AFP) May 18, 2025-Iran's top diplomat said Sunday his country
was ready to rebuild trust with European powers considering whether to
reimpose UN sanctions on the Islamic republic under a 2015 nuclear
deal."Iran is ready, should it observe genuine will and an independent
approach from the European parties, to begin a new chapter in its
relations with Europe," said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi."If Europe
possesses the necessary will to rectify this path, Iran sees no obstacle
to rebuilding mutual trust and expanding relations," he told a
diplomatic forum in Tehran. On Friday, senior Iranian diplomats met with
counterparts from Britain, France and Germany for talks on the status of
US-Iran nuclear negotiations.Tehran has held four rounds of
Oman-mediated nuclear talks with Washington, the highest-level contact
between the two foes since the US abandoned a 2015 nuclear accord.US
President Donald Trump effectively torpedoed the deal in 2018 during his
first term, by unilaterally pulling out and reimposing sanctions on
Iran's oil exports and banking sector.A year later, Iran began rolling
back its commitments to the agreement, which had offered sanctions
relief in return for UN-monitored restrictions on its nuclear
activities. The three European powers -- party to the 2015 accord -- are
weighing whether to trigger "snapback" mechanism, which would reinstate
UN sanctions in response to Iranian non-compliance. That option expires
in October.Araghchi earlier this month warned of "irreversible"
consequences if Britain, France and Germany moved to reimpose
sanctions. The minister had previously proposed visiting London, Paris
and Berlin for discussions on the nuclear issue as well as other areas
"of mutual interest and concern".In his speech on Sunday, he urged the
Europeans to focus more on shared interests rather than differences.
Pakistan FM to visit China on heels of conflict with India over Kashmir.
Islamabad,
May 18 (AFP) May 18, 2025-Pakistan's foreign minister will make a
three-day official visit to China, his office said on Sunday, a little
over a week after Islamabad reached a ceasefire with India to end their
most serious conflict in decades.Ishaq Dar, who also holds the portfolio
of deputy prime minister, will start his visit on Monday in Beijing
where he will hold "in-depth discussions" with Chinese counterpart Wang
Yi "on the evolving regional situation in South Asia and its
implications for peace and stability", his office said in a
statement."The two sides will also review the entire spectrum of
Pakistan-China bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and
global developments of mutual interest," it said.Dar's visit to Beijing
comes on the heels of a tumultuous couple of weeks, following an April
attack in Indian-administered Kashmir in which 26 people were killed.New
Delhi blamed Islamabad for backing the militants it claimed were behind
the attack -- the deadliest on civilians in Muslim-majority Kashmir in
decades. Pakistan denies the charge. The territory is claimed in full by
both India and Pakistan, which have fought several wars over Kashmir
since their 1947 independence from British rule.On May 7, India launched
strikes against what it said were "terrorist camps" in Pakistan,
kicking off four days of intense tit-for-tat drone, missile and
artillery exchanges with Islamabad. The conflict left more than 70
people, including dozens of civilians, dead on both sides.Fearing
further escalation, global leaders had urged restraint from both sides
early on in the conflict, including China which promised to play a
"constructive role" -- though experts say Beijing had clearly picked a
side.China has been one of Pakistan's most reliable foreign partners,
readily providing financial assistance to bail out its often struggling
neighbour.Dar told parliament on May 7, hours after aerial combat
between the two sides, that Islamabad used Chinese jets against India,
with Beijing's ambassador called to his office over the deployment."At 4
am in the morning, the whole Chinese team, led by their ambassador, was
present at the foreign office," Dar told the parliament."We apprised
them about all the developments taken place until that time, and they
were very happy," he said.US President Donald Trump announced a surprise
truce on May 10, which appears to be holding over a week later. While
Islamabad stated earlier in the week that the ceasefire would last until
Sunday, the Indian army said there was no expiry date to the agreement.
Iran, European powers hold nuclear talks in Turkey.
Istanbul,
May 16 (AFP) May 16, 2025-Iran met with European powers on Friday to
discuss its nuclear negotiations with Washington, while US President
Donald Trump issued a new threat unless the Iranians "move quickly"
towards a deal. The meeting in Istanbul followed remarks by Iran's
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warning of "irreversible" consequences
if Britain, France and Germany move to reimpose United Nations sanctions
that were lifted under a landmark 2015 agreement.Iran's Deputy Foreign
Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who attended the talks in the Turkish city,
said in a post on X: "We exchanged views and discussed the latest status
of the indirect nuclear negotiations and the lifting of
sanctions."Gharibabadi added that, if necessary, Tehran would meet again
with the so-called E3 -- the European parties to the 2015 deal along
with China, Russia and the United States -- to continue discussions,
after several meetings since last year.Trump had effectively torpedoed
the deal during his first term, by unilaterally abandoning it in 2018
and reimposing sanctions on Iran's banking sector and oil exports.A year
later, Iran responded by rolling back its own commitments under the
deal, which provided relief from sanctions in return for UN-monitored
restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities.Speaking Friday in Abu Dhabi,
Trump said that his administration had handed Iran a proposal for a new
agreement, after four rounds of negotiations in recent weeks."They have a
proposal, but more importantly, they know they have to move quickly or
something bad is going to happen," Trump said.Araghchi later wrote on X
that "Iran has not received any written proposal from the United States,
whether directly or indirectly".He added that an agreement can be
reached if Washington lifts sanctions and respects "our rights" --
including to enrich uranium."Mark my words: there is no scenario in
which Iran abandons its hard-earned right to enrichment for peaceful
purposes," Araghchi said. The Iran-US talks mediated by Oman were the
highest-level contact between the two foes since Washington abandoned
the nuclear accord.- 'Sustain diplomacy' -The three European powers have
been weighing whether to trigger the 2015 deal's "snapback" mechanism,
which would reinstate UN sanctions in response to Iranian non-compliance
-- an option that expires in October.Such a stance "risks provoking a
global nuclear proliferation crisis that would primarily affect
Europeans themselves", Iran's top diplomat has warned. However, writing
in the French weekly Le Point, he also noted that Tehran was "ready to
turn the page" in its relations with Europe.Gharibabadi said after
Friday's meeting that "Iran and the three European countries are
determined to sustain and make optimal use of diplomacy".In a post on X,
the UK Foreign Office's political director, Christian Turner, said the
parties reaffirmed their "commitment to dialogue, welcomed ongoing
US/Iran talks, and given urgency, agreed to meet again."A US official
said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on Friday with the French,
British and German national security advisers in Istanbul for talks on
Iran and Ukraine.Araghchi has said that the talks with the Europeans and
the United States were proceeding on separate track.China, which held
recent talks with Iran on its nuclear programme, said ahead of Friday's
talks that it remained "committed to promoting a political and
diplomatic settlement of the Iran issue".- 'Getting close' -Speaking on a
visit to Qatar Thursday, Trump said the United States was "getting
close" to a deal with Iran that would avert military action."We're not
going to be making any nuclear dust in Iran," he said. Since returning
to office, Trump has revived his "maximum pressure" policy on Tehran,
backing nuclear diplomacy but warning of military action if it
fails.Trump has said he presented Iran's leadership with an "olive
branch", adding that it was an offer that would not last forever. He
further threatened to impose "massive maximum pressure", including
driving Iranian oil exports to zero if talks failed. Iran currently
enriches uranium to 60 percent, far above the 3.67-percent limit set in
the 2015 deal but below the 90 percent needed for a nuclear
warhead.Tehran insists its right to continue enriching uranium for
peaceful purposes is "non-negotiable" but says it would be open to
temporary restrictions on how much uranium it enriches and to what
level. On Wednesday, Iran's atomic energy agency chief Mohammad Eslami
reiterated that Tehran "does not seek nuclear militarisation", adding
that enrichment was under the supervision of the UN nuclear
watchdog."The dismantling of enrichment is not accepted by Iran," he
stressed.rkh/ami
Post-Brexit UK willing to 'align' with EU in some areas: minister.
London,
May 18 (AFP) May 18, 2025-A UK minister said on Sunday that the
government could be willing to align with EU rules in some areas as
opposition parties accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of "surrender",
ahead of landmark talks.Starmer is set to sign a new deal with the
European Union this week as he hosts the first post-Brexit EU-UK summit
on Monday. The London gathering with EU chiefs is aimed at agreeing steps
towards a closer relationship between Britain and the 27-country bloc
that it left five years ago after an acrimonious referendum.Details of
any deal have remained vague, and Minister for European Union Relations
Nick Thomas-Symonds told the BBC on Sunday that they were still being
worked out.He said the Labour government was taking a practical approach
"where it is in our national interest to align on common standards to
make sure we get far easier trade, to mean that businesses... can start
trading with the EU again".Starmer has ruled out rejoining the customs
union and single market but has suggested the UK is ready for regulatory
alignment with the EU on food and agricultural products. His Downing
Street office said a deal would help UK producers "who face red tape and
checks just to export to our nearest and biggest trading partner" and
would drive down costs in the shops.EU diplomats in Brussels have been
working on getting Britain to keep its waters open for European
fishermen in return for easing the checks on some food imports from the
UK.Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said it "sounds like we're
giving away our fishing quotas, becoming a rule-taker from
Brussels".Both she and the anti-immigration Reform UK leader Nigel
Farage described the yet to be announced deal as a "surrender" and said
they would ditch it if elected. On the contentious issue of a youth
mobility scheme, Thomas-Symonds told the BBC's Sunday with Laura
Kuenssberg programme that it would have to be "smart and controlled".The
European Union is said to be keen on a scheme that would allow European
18- to 30-year-olds to study and work in the UK, and vice versa in the
EU for young Brits.Earlier this month, Reform UK made big gains in local
elections, continuing the momentum it built up at last year's general
election.Badenoch said she feared any youth mobility scheme would
reintroduce the EU policy of freedom of movement "by the
backdoor".Thomas-Symonds rejected the criticism, highlighting that the
UK already had 13 youth mobility schemes with other countries."Nobody is
remotely suggesting that that is freedom of movement with those
countries, it absolutely isn't," he said.Senior Conservative Party
politician Alex Burghart, said that such a scheme flew in the face of
public concerns about high levels of immigration."They want immigration
to come down and if you have an uncapped youth mobility scheme, you're
going to have much higher immigration," he told the BBC.
Iran, Azerbaijan hold joint military drill.
Tehran,
May 18 (AFP) May 18, 2025-Iran and Azerbaijan have launched a joint
special forces exercise, state media in the Islamic republic said
Sunday, weeks after Iran's president visited the neighbouring
country. The "Aras-2025" exercise, running through May 21, involves
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Azerbaijani troops, the
IRNA news agency reported. The drill was being held in areas of Karabakh
previously disputed with Armenia before Azerbaijan regained control in
September 2023."This drill is a key step in boosting border security and
confronting potential threats," said Brigadier General Vali Madani of
the Guards' ground forces.Last month, Iranian President Masoud
Pezeshkian made a rare visit to Baku, where he met his Azerbaijani
counterpart Ilham Aliyev."Iran will make efforts to ensure that its
relations with Azerbaijan are strategic across all spheres," Pezeshkian
said at the time.Ties between the two neighbours were strained over
Azerbaijan's close security cooperation with Israel and a deadly 2023
attack on its embassy in Tehran.Baku reopened the embassy in mid-2024
and the attacker was sentenced to death.Tehran has been strongly opposed
to the so-called Zangezur corridor linking Azerbaijan to Turkey which
would run along Iran's border with Armenia. In November, the two
countries held a joint naval exercise in the Caspian Sea.

James Comey Deletes Post Depicting '8647' After Backlash
Online-Published May 15, 2025 at 7:09 PM EDT-By Anna Commander-Deputy
News Editor
Former FBI Director James Comey apparently posted a
photo of shells on a beach that were aligned to read "8647" and has
since sparked backlash online by those saying it is a "threat" aimed at
President Donald Trump.Newsweek reached out to Comey via his book
website and the White House by email on Thursday. Why It Matters-Comey
was appointed by former President Barack Obama, and during Trump's first
term led the reopened investigation into former Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton's use of her personal email.Trump later fired Comey—a
move that triggered pushback—for his handling of the investigation.
Comey has since been a noted critic of Trump, especially during the
president's legal battles involving his handling of classified
documents. What To Know-In a since-deleted post on an Instagram account
using Comey's name, the former FBI director said, "Cool shell formation
on my beach walk." The account has over 130,000 followers. The post
sparked immediate criticism from conservatives. It is immediately
unknown to Newsweek at the time of publication if Comey's account was
hacked or tampered with in any way.Donald Trump Jr. reacted on X,
formerly Twitter, on Thursday: "Just James Comey causally [sic] calling
for my dad to be murdered. This is who the Dem-Media worships.
Demented!!!!"Meghan McCain, daughter of late Republican Senator John
McCain of Arizona, posted on X, saying, "Don't know how this can be
interpreted as any other way but a threat against President Trump. James
Comey should at the very least get a visit from the secret service.
Also is everyone mentally ill?"The phrase "8647" is perceived to be an
anti-Trump message, with lawmakers like Republican Senator Mike Lee
calling for Americans to condemn its use.The association to Trump is
that he is the 47th president of the United States, and the term "86"
generally signifies to eliminate something (or someone) as a mafia
reference commonly understood to mean "take eight miles out of town and
put six feet under ground." In the restaurant industry, it can also mean
that a dish is no longer available, according to Chef's Resource. In a
new post on Instagram, Comey said he saw the shells and "assumed" they
were "a political message. I didn't realize some folks associate those
numbers with violence."Comey added that, "It never occurred to me but I
oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down."Homeland Security
Secretary Kristi Noem also reacted to the post on X, calling out Comey:
"Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the
assassination of @POTUS Trump. DHS and Secret Service is investigating
this threat and will respond appropriately."In an email to Newsweek on
Thursday, a Secret Service spokesperson said, "The Secret Service
vigorously investigates anything that can be taken as a potential threat
against our protectees. We take this responsibility very seriously and
we are aware of the social media posts in question. Beyond that, we do
not comment on protective intelligence matters."What People Are
Saying-FBI Director Kash Patel posted to X on Thursday: "We are aware of
the recent social media post by former FBI Director James Comey,
directed at President Trump. We are in communication with the Secret
Service and Director Curran. Primary jurisdiction is with SS on these
matters and we, the FBI, will provide all necessary support."Republican
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene posted to X on Thursday: "How many
times are Democrats going to try to assassinate President Trump??? Here
is former FBI Director James Comey!!!! 👇"Republican Senator Marsha
Blackburn of Tennessee posted to X on Thursday: "James Comey is posting
cryptic messages online alluding to getting rid of President Trump.
Would he like to explain what he means by this given the assassination
attempts on President Trump? Take a look, @FBIDirectorKash @FBI."What
Happens Next-It is not immediately clear how the Secret Service, FBI or
Homeland Security will proceed.Update 5/15/25, 8:55 p.m. ET: This

Explosion outside fertility clinic in California kills 1; police say act appeared ‘intentional’ Nation May 17, 2025 6:24 PM EDT
An
explosion that heavily damaged a fertility clinic in the California
city of Palm Springs appears to have been intentional, local authorities
said. One person was found dead, and the FBI said it was sending
investigators, including bomb technicians, to the scene.Palm Springs
Police Chief Andy Mills said in a statement Saturday that the blast
“appears to be an intentional act of violence” and that several
buildings damaged, some severely.“There has been one fatality, the
person’s identity is not known,” Mills’ statement said. The act was being
investigated as a possible car explosion, said two law enforcement
officials briefed on the matter who insisted on anonymity to discuss
preliminary information from an ongoing investigation. Authorities have
not disclosed a motive.FBI Los Angeles said in a social media post on X
that “assets being deployed include investigators, bomb technicians
& an evidence response team.” Investigators from the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also assisting. The city
of Palm Springs said Saturday that the explosion happened at 11 a.m.
local time and that residents were being asked to avoid the area around
North Indian Canyon Drive near East Tachevah Drive.Dr. Maher Abdallah,
who runs the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic, confirmed
that his clinic was damaged. He told The Associated Press in a phone
interview that all of his staff were safe and accounted for. The

consultations with patients, but left the IVF lab and all of the stored
embryos there unharmed.FBI Los Angeles said in a social media post on X

said. “Thank God today happened to be a day that we have no

the building that housed the fertility clinic’s office space. The blast
caved in the building’s roof and blew a wide debris field across a
sidewalk and four lanes of the street on the other side of the
structure.Rhino Williams, 47, was chatting with customers at a
restaurant he helps manage inside the Skylark Hotel just over a block
away from the scene when he heard a huge boom. Everything rattled, he
said, and Williams — who has a background in aviation — immediately
sprinted to the scene to see if anyone was in need of help, thinking a
helicopter might have crashed.Williams saw a large dark gray plume of
smoke and covered his nose with his shirt as he smelled burning plastic
and rubber. He said he saw a building had “blown out” into the street,
with bricks and debris scattered everywhere, and spotted a car’s front
axle on fire in the building’s parking lot.He said it was the only car
in the lot that he saw. He ran into the building, calling out and
peering behind the counter to see if anyone was inside. He did not hear a
response and did not see anyone behind the counter.Williams said he ran
around to check on other nearby buildings. Multiple windows of the
neighboring liquor store were also blown out, he said. Once he saw
authorities arrive, he headed back to the hotel.Nima Tabrizi, 37, of
Santa Monica, said he was inside a cannabis dispensary nearby when he
felt a massive explosion.“The building just shook, and we go outside and
there’s massive cloud smoke,” Tabrizi said. “Crazy explosion. It felt
like a bomb went off. … We went up to the scene, and we saw human
remains.”Palm Springs is a tony community in the desert about a two-hour

Here’s how 10 violent New Orleans inmates
escaped jail — after leaving taunting graffiti for cops-By Shane
Galvin-Published May 16, 2025
The 10 violent inmates who escaped a
Louisiana prison Friday broke out using a small window that was covered
by a toilet — and left a wall full of taunting graffiti for
investigators, photos show.Orleans Justice Center officials made the
shocking discovery during headcount at 8:30 a.m. — just over eight hours
after the jibe-happy gang of allegedly violent offenders used the small
porthole to enter a maintenance area, scale a wall and exit the New
Orleans prison, WVUE reported. One witness reported seeing all 10 inmates
— clad in their matching orange jumpsuits — running across Interstate
10 in the dark of night, outlet reported.“To Easy LOL,” a misspelled
message directly above the small rectangular and weakly barred window
read.“I’m/We Innocent,” another declared.“Most Hated 9″ was scrawled in
the middle of a crudely drawn smiley face with a stuck-out tongue while
another note taunted, “Catch us when you can.”Louisiana police officials
were, in fact, able to catch one of the 10 escapees around 11 a.m. —
taking Kendall Myles, who was accused of shooting a man, into custody,
WVUE reported.Myles was discovered, pursued and arrested by NOLA cops in
the French Quarter, the city’s most popular tourist area, according to a
Louisiana State Police Facebook post.Dkenan Dennis, who was nabbed for
armed robbery and weapons charges, and Robert Moody, accused of drug
trafficking, battery and obstruction of justice, were recaptured Friday
evening. The rest of the lammers have violent criminal histories, with
officials worrying the convicts could be looking to settle old scores,
WVUE reported.Derrick Groves was convicted of double murder from a mass
shooting during Mardi Gras in 2018, and police warned he could be
looking for trial witnesses, according to the outlet.Corey Boyed is
accused of second-degree murder and aggravated battery, while Gary Price
was being held on attempted first-degree murder.Repeat escapee Antoine
Massey was locked up on domestic abuse, theft, parole violation,
kidnapping and rape charges.Lenton Venburen was accused of murder in
2021 and was being held on firearm possession and parole violation.Leo
Tate faced burglary and weapons possession charges.Earlier reports
misidentified Keith Lewis as an escapee before discovering that he had
simply been moved to another unit within Orleans Justice Center, WVUE
reported, citing local police.Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson stated
Friday that the plumbing panels behind the toilet used in the escape
could only be removed from the outside — which could indicate the
inmates had outside help, according to the outlet.Staffing levels at the
jail are currently 60%, the sheriff reported.State officials are
outraged at the slapstick shortcoming.“Someone clearly dropped the ball
and there’s no excuse for this,” Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill
told the outlet. She’s calling for a full investigation into the
jailbreak and stated she wanted to know whether staffers or any
outsiders were complicit. What do you think? Be the first to comment. The
jail remains on full lockdown. Both an internal investigation and a
manhunt are underway in New Orleans.
Mexican navy tall ship
smashes into Brooklyn Bridge, shears off masts after losing power, 2
dead, 17 hurt-By Anna Young, Larry Celona, Joe Marino and Marie
Pohl-Published May 17, 2025
A massive Mexican navy tall ship on a
goodwill visit to New York slammed into the Brooklyn Bridge late
Saturday — toppling its huge masts in a horrifying scene that left two
dead and 17 injured, including two critically, according to fire
officials and sources. The majestic Cuauhtémoc — which has a crew of 277,
mostly cadets — apparently lost power as it was sailing out of New York
on its way to Iceland and the current carried it into the road deck of
the bridge around 8:30 p.m., according to Mayor Eric Adams and footage
of the crash. The collision sheared off the ship’s 147-foot masts – with
alarming footage capturing numerous crew members dangling for their
lives from the sails and booms after the boat hit the bridge, which has a
max clearance of 135 feet. Police boats at the scene of the
collision. Citizen“The boat was coming under the bridge, and there were
sailors on top of the boat, the sails hit the bridge and then people
were falling off of the boat sails,” said Elijah West, who witnessed the
chilling crash at Brooklyn Bridge Park.Brooklyn Bridge crash-Terrified
witnesses describe ‘scary’ moment Mexican navy tall ship crashed into
Brooklyn Bridge: ‘A lot of people were crying’“It was crazy. We were
standing under the bridge and we all started running. Then I saw people
hanging from the sails. Police boats came around fast — about five
minutes later. And then police guided the boat to the (Manhattan) bridge
and started the rescue. It was a shock.”Numerous onlookers stood by the
shore with cameras and filmed the ship’s departure from numerous angles
— and became alarmed as the tips of the masts toppled over one by one
as they hit the bridge.“She’s about to crash,” one startled witness
could be heard saying in the footage.“Oh s–t!”Ismari Romero, 43, said
what was supposed to be a joyous send off for the ship turned to screams
as witnesses could see the still moving ship with its sailors, many of
whom were cadets, dangling perilously. “We were scared — a lot of people
were screaming, a lot of people were crying,” said Romero, who
witnessed the gripping incident with her sister from Pier 17. “We were
celebrating and we were saying goodbye and singing. We were all joyful,
and they departed. And then they reached the Brooklyn Bridge.”Harrowing
footage from the scene captured panicked onlookers who were standing
under the bridge bolting from the riverside park as the vessel drifted
toward the grassy area. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” said Aya
Asan, a 33-year-old photographer from Crown Heights, who had just
completed a proposal photoshoot at the park, where tourists gathered to
watch the sunset just over the horizon. “For a moment, I thought the
boat might somehow crash into the park area, where the people were. I
started running away, everyone started running … Everyone was shocked
and then we saw a lot of police and heard sirens. I saw people hanging
there.”First responders scoured the waters following reports that crew
members had fallen in, but sources later said no one had.Retired navy
Capt. Alfred S.McLaren called the tragic incident “inconceivable.”“I’m
dumbfounded,” the former nuclear submarine captain said.“It could lose
power and drift. So the question is just how fast were they going. But
why didn’t they use a rudder one way or another? One of the first things
I would have done is drop my anchor or anchors.”The mutilated ship is
currently idle in the water while emergency responders work at Pier 16
to care for the wounded. It’s expected to be moved to Pier 36, sources
said. Those in critical condition were transported to nearby hospitals
for treatment. Officials have not released the names of the two crew
members who died. Fire officials warned motorists to expect traffic
delays and road closures near New Dock Street & water Street in
Brooklyn. The bridge, which suffered minor damage, has since reopened to
the public. The vessel, built in Spain in 1982 with the sole purpose of
training cadets, was in New York City as part of a promotion for next
year’s Sail4th tall ship event, which celebrates America’s 250th
birthday. The stop is just the third in the vessel’s eight-month voyage
around the globe, which offers the Mexican cadets the opportunity to
flex their sailing muscles in environments like Jamaica, Iceland,
Portugal and more. This year’s class boasts 175 cadets, the largest
class the nation’s navy has seen yet.“The classes are getting bigger and
bigger. We just keep getting more and more people!” said Lt. Sg. Hugo
Calvario, the ship’s orthopedic surgeon.“We had to leave almost 40% of
the crew to take on more cadets,” he continued, meaning the trainees
have to pick up the slack and take on more responsibilities. The Post
watched earlier this week as they skillfully climbed the dauntingly high
ropes and stretched across the towers of the ship’s three masts to
conduct what in English is known as “manning the yards” — a universal
sign of respect that is done every time a ship enters a port.It is
expected to be one of 30 Class A International Tall Ships that will
parade through the Harbor on July 4, 2026.Mexican President Claudia
Sheinbaum said she was “deeply saddened” over the deaths of the crew
members. The Mexican navy released a statement after the wreck. What do
you think? Be the first to comment.“During the sailing maneuver of the
Cuauhtémoc sailboat in New York, a mishap occurred with the Brooklyn
Bridge, causing damage to the training ship, preventing the continuation
of the training cruise for the time being,” they said.“The status of
personnel and equipment is being reviewed by naval and local

Mexican Navy training ship hits New York's Brooklyn Bridge.
New
York, May 18 (AFP) May 18, 2025-A Mexican Navy training ship slammed
into the Brooklyn Bridge late Saturday, snapping all three of its masts
as it collided with the iconic New York City landmark, injuring at least
22 people.Onlookers enjoying the balmy spring evening watched in horror
as the ship, its sails furled and festive lights draped in its rigging,
tried to pass beneath the bridge, which sheared off the masts and sent
them crashing into the East River. The Mexican Navy said in a statement
that 22 people on board the training ship were injured, three of them
critically. Some US media reports suggested that sailors had been in the
rigging as the ship slammed into the bridge. The Navy said in its
statement that no one had fallen into the water, and that no rescue
operation had been launched.Victims were rushed to local hospitals, The
New York Post reported.According to multiple US media reports, around
200 people were on the Cuauhtemoc, a barque built in 1982 which had a
mast height of 48.2 meters (158 feet), at the time. The Cuauhtemoc had
been on a training maneouver at the time and was damaged in the
"mishap," the Mexican Navy said in a separate statement on X."The
Ministry of the Navy reaffirms its commitment to the safety of its
personnel, transparency in its operations and excellence in the training
of future officers of the Mexican Navy," it said.

15
And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten
seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of
seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot.
16 Take an harp, go
about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody,
sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.
17 And it shall
come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit
Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with

13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those
miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to
them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the
beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had
power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the
beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the

Leo XIV at Inauguration Mass: 'Let us walk towards God and love one
another'-Pope Leo XIV presides at the Mass of Inauguration of his
Petrine Ministry in Saint Peter’s Square, and invites the Church to walk
together along the path of God's love and remain united in one
family.By Vatican News
Greeting over 200,000 pilgrims, leaders
from around the world, and representatives of Christian denominations,
Pope Leo XIV marked the joyous start to his Petrine Ministry, officially
inaugurating it with Mass in Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday, 18
May.Religious delegations included Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist,
Sikh, Zoroastrian and Jainists, among the many present for the
celebration.Heart full of gratitude-Expressing his heartfelt gratitude
for the prayerful and joyful support offered to him as he begins his
pastoral ministry as Pope, Leo XIV recalled the intense emotions
experienced over these past few weeks."Following the death of Pope
Francis, we felt like sheep without a shepherd," he recalled, "yet
having received his final blessing on Easter Sunday, and with eyes of
faith, hope, and joy, we remembered how the Lord never abandons His
people.”The Pope also thanked everyone for accompanying in prayer the
College of Cardinals meeting in conclave to elect the Successor of Peter
as they looked at how to continue the mission of preaching the Gospel
with a shepherd able to address today’s challenges. He said they felt
“the working of the Holy Spirit, who was able to bring us into harmony,
like musical instruments, so that our heartstrings could vibrate in a
single melody.”United in love and unity"I was chosen, without any merit
of my own, and now, with fear and trembling," said Pope Leo, "I come to
you as a brother, who desires to be the servant of your faith and your
joy, walking with you on the path of God’s love, for he wants us all to
be united in one family."Pope Leo XIV recalled how love and unity are
the two aspects of the mission entrusted to Peter by Jesus. In the Gospel
on this Sunday, Jesus entrusts the disciples to continue the mission,
to be “fishers of men” and bring the “hope of the Gospel” to all people
“so that all may experience God’s embrace.”Peter’s experience of the
“infinite and unconditional love of God" enabled him to take up this
mission, the Pope explained.Self-sacrificing love-Pope Leo recalled how
Peter is entrusted then with “loving more” and “giving his life for the
flock,” a “self-sacrificing love.”“The ministry of Peter is
distinguished precisely by this self-sacrificing love, because the
Church of Rome presides in charity and its true authority is the charity
of Christ. It is never a question of capturing others by force, by
religious propaganda or by means of power. Instead, it is always and
only a question of loving as Jesus did.”Church, sign of unity and
communion-The Holy Father expressed his hope for "a united Church, a
sign of unity and communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled
world."In the face of a world marked by so much discord and wounds
caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, fear, and economic reality “that
exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalises the poorest,” the Pope
said, “we want to be a small leaven of unity, communion, and fraternity
within the world.”"We want to say to the world, with humility and joy:
Look to Christ! Come closer to him! Welcome his word that enlightens and
consoles! Listen to his offer of love and become his one family: in the
one Christ, we are one," he urged. "This is the path to follow
together, among ourselves but also with our sister Christian churches,
with those who follow other religious paths, with those who are
searching for God, with all women and men of good will, in order to
build a new world where peace reigns!"The Pope upheld the missionary
spirit, adding that such an approach will keep the Church from closing
itself off in small groups or taking on a feeling of superiority to the
world.“We are called to offer God’s love to everyone, in order to
achieve that unity which does not cancel out differences but values the
personal history of each person and the social and religious culture of
every people," he said.“Brothers and sisters, this is the hour for love!
The heart of the Gospel is the love of God that makes us brothers and
sisters.”In conclusion, Pope Leo XIV invited all Christians to be
enlightened by the Holy Spirit, so that we might build a Church “founded
on God’s love, a sign of unity, a missionary Church that opens its arms
to the world, proclaims the word, allows itself to be made ‘restless’
by history, and becomes a leaven of harmony for humanity.”“Together, as
one people, as brothers and sisters, let us walk towards God and love
one another.”
Full Text of Pope Leo XIV’s Homily From Inauguration Mass: ‘This is the Hour For Love’
Brothers
and sisters, I would like that our first great desire be for a united
Church, a sign of unity and communion, which becomes a leaven for a
reconciled world...’Pope Leo XIV celebrates his Inaugural Mass on May
18, 2025 to thousands gathered in St. Peter's Square.May 18, 2025
Editor's
Note: Pope Leo XIV celebrated his Inaugural Mass with thousands
gathered in St. Peter's Square on May 18, 2025. Below is a full
transcript of his homily printed with permission.Dear Brother Cardinals,
Brother Bishops and Priests, Distinguished Authorities and Members of
the Diplomatic Corps, and those who traveled here for the Jubilee of
Confraternities, Brothers and Sisters:I greet all of you with a heart
full of gratitude at the beginning of the ministry that has been
entrusted to me. Saint Augustine wrote: “Lord, you have made us for
yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you” (Confessions,
I: 1,1).In these days, we have experienced intense emotions. The death
of Pope Francis filled our hearts with sadness. In those difficult
hours, we felt like the crowds that the Gospel says were “like sheep
without a shepherd” (Mt 9:36). Yet on Easter Sunday, we received his
final blessing and, in the light of the resurrection, we experienced the
days that followed in the certainty that the Lord never abandons his
people, but gathers them when they are scattered and guards them “as a
shepherd guards his flock” (Jer 31:10).In this spirit of faith, the
College of Cardinals met for the conclave. Coming from different
backgrounds and experiences, we placed in God’s hands our desire to
elect the new Successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome, a shepherd capable
of preserving the rich heritage of the Christian faith and, at the same
time, looking to the future, in order to confront the questions,
concerns and challengeso f today’s world.Accompanied by your prayers, we
could feel the working of the Holy Spirit, who was able to bring us
into harmony, like musical instruments, so that our heartstrings could
vibrate in a single melody. I was chosen, without any merit of my own,
and now, with fear and trembling, I come to you as a brother, who
desires to be the servant of your faith and your joy, walking with you
on the path of God’s love, for he wants us all to be united in one
family.Love and unity: these are the two dimensions of the mission
entrusted to Peter by Jesus. We see this in today’s Gospel, which takes
us to the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus began the mission he received from
the Father: to be a “fisher” of humanity in order to draw it up from
the waters of evil and death. Walking along the shore, he had called
Peter and the other first disciples to be, like him, “fishers of
men”.Now, after the resurrection, it is up to them to carry on this
mission, to cast their nets again and again, to bring the hope of the
Gospel into the “waters” of the world, to sail the seas of life so that
all may experience God’s embrace. How can Peter carry out this task? The
Gospel tells us that it is possible only because his own life was
touched by the infinite and unconditional love of God, even in the hour
of his failure and denial. For this reason, when Jesus addresses Peter,
the Gospel uses the Greek verb agapáo, which refers to the love that God
has for us, to the offering of himself without reserve and without
calculation. Whereas the verb used in Peter’s response describes the
love of friendship that we have for one another.Consequently, when Jesus
asks Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” (Jn
21:16), he is referring to the love of the Father. It is as if Jesus
said to him, “Only if you have known and experienced this love of God,
which never fails, will you be able to feed my lambs. Only in the love
of God the Father will you be able to love your brothers and sisters
with that same ‘more’, that is, by offering your life for your brothers
and sisters.”Peter is thus entrusted with the task of “loving more” and
giving his life for the flock. The ministry of Peter is distinguished
precisely by this self-sacrificing love, because the Church of Rome
presides in charity and its true authority is the charity of Christ. It
is never a question of capturing others by force, by religious
propaganda or by means of power. Instead, it is always and only a
question of loving as Jesus did.The Apostle Peter himself tells us that
Jesus “is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, and has
become the cornerstone” (Acts 4:11). Moreover, if the rock is Christ,
Peter must shepherd the flock without ever yielding to the temptation to
be an autocrat, lording it over those entrusted to him (cf. 1 Pet 5:3).
On the contrary, he is called to serve the faith of his brothers and
sisters, and to walk alongside them, for all of us are “living stones”
(1 Pet 2:5), called through our baptism to build God’s house in
fraternal communion, in the harmony of the Spirit, in the coexistence of
diversity. In the words of Saint Augustine: “The Church consists of all
those who are in harmony with their brothers and sisters and who love
their neighbour” (Serm. 359,9).Brothers and sisters, I would like that
our first great desire be for a united Church, a sign of unity and
communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled world. In this our
time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred,
violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm
that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the poorest. For our
part, we want to be a small leaven of unity, communion and fraternity
within the world. We want to say to the world, with humility and joy:
Look to Christ! Come closer to him! Welcome his word that enlightens and
consoles! Listen to his offer of love and become his one family: in the
one Christ, we are one. This is the path to follow together, among
ourselves but also with our sister Christian churches, with those who
follow other religious paths, with those who are searching for God, with
all women and men of good will, in order to build a new world where
peace reigns! This is the missionary spirit that must animate us; not
closing ourselves off in our small groups, nor feeling superior to the
world. We are called to offer God’s love to everyone, in order to
achieve that unity which does not cancel out differences but values the
personal history of each person and the social and religious culture of
every people.Brothers and sisters, this is the hour for love! The heart
of the Gospel is the love of God that makes us brothers and sisters.
With my predecessor Leo XIII, we can ask ourselves today: If this
criterion “were to prevail in the world, would not every conflict cease
and peace return?” (Rerum Novarum, 21).With the light and the strength
of the Holy Spirit, let us build a Church founded on God’s love, a sign
of unity, a missionary Church that opens its arms to the world,
proclaims the word, allows itself to be made “restless” by history, and
becomes a leaven of harmony for humanity. Together, as one people, as
brothers and sisters, let us walk towards God and love one another.

IMPLANT IN THEIR HAND OR FOREHEAD. OR THEY CAN NOT OR SELL ANY THING.
AND SINCE SATAN WILL INCARNATED INSIDE THE EU LEADER AND BRING HIM BACK
TO LIFE.THIS AT THE MIDPOINT IS WHEN HE CALLS HIMSELF GOD AND SITS IN
THE ISRAELI 3RD TEMPLE. AFTER STOPPING THE ISRAELIS FROM SACRIFICING
ANIMALS TO GOD. THEN A JEW I BELIEVE WILL KILL HIM WITH A HEAD WOUND.
THEN HE DIES FOR 3 DAYS. THEN SATAN INCARNATES HIS BODY. THEIR WILL BE
THE SATANIC-DEMONIC TRINITY. THE DEVIL REPRESENTS THE FATHER, THE EU
LEADER REPRESENTS JESUS, AND THE FALSE POPE REPRESENTS THE DEMONIC HOLY
SPIRT. THESE 3 NEED TECHNOLOGY TO DECEIVE THE GODLESS SINNERS. SINCE THE
TRUE GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING, EVERY WERE AT ALL TIMES. THESE 3 DEMONIC
LAKE OF FIRE GOERS NEED TECHNOLOGY TO DO THE FALSE MIRACLES AND WONDERS
TO DECEIVE EVERYBODY ON EARTH. BUT JESUS HELPS THE DEVIL BY SENDING THE
STRONG DELUTION OF THE FALSE RESURRECTION OF THE EU LEADER. TO COMPLETE
THE LIE FOR THE EARTHS GODLESS SINNERS AND CULTS TO BELIEVE. SO THEY
CONDEMN THEMSELVES TO THE LAKE OF FIRE FOREVER. WHEN THEY TAKE SATAN
NAME OR NUMBER IN THEIR CHIP IMPLANT. WHICH MEANS THEY WORSHIP THE EU
LEADER AS GOD. AND REFUSES JESUS SALVATION GIFT OF LOVE AND TRUTH. OF
ETERNAL LIFE ON EARTH WITH JESUS, THE FATHER AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. WERE
WE CHRISTIANS WILL RULE OVER THE CITIES, TOWNS, NATIONS OF THE EARTH.
WHILE THE JEWS AND ISRAELIS WILL BE HELPING JESUS WITH THE 4TH TEMPLE
SACRIFICES AND WHATEVER HAS TO BE DONE FOR ALL THE DAILY SACRIFICES. AND
WHATEVER KING JESUS ON DAVIDS THRONE NEEDS FROM THE 4TH TEMPLE RULING.
AND THE JEWS WILL ALSO BE GROWING ALL THE FIELDS NEEDED FOR THE TEMPLE
WORSHIP. AND ALSO THE JEWS WILL BE TAKING CARE OF ALL THE ANIMALS THAT
WILL BE NEEDED FROM THE FARMS OF GOLD TO BE SACRIFICED IN THE 4TH
TEMPLE. IT CAN NOT BE THE 3RD TEMPLE. BECAUSE SATAN INSIDE THE EU LEADER
DICTATOR POLLUTED IT BY SIN. SO PROBABLY WHEN JESUS RETURNS TO EARTH AT
THE END OF THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION PERIOD. THE 3RD TEMPLE WILL BE
DESTROYED BY THE BIGGEST EARTHQUAKE EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD.
THAT WILL GET RID OF THE POLLUTED 3RD TEMPLE. THEN THE CHRISTIANS AND
JEWS WILL QUICKLY HELP BUILD THE 4TH TEMPLE FOR JESUS TO RULE FROM. FOR
THE THOUSAND YEAR MILLENIUM RULE FROM DAVIDS THRONE IN JERUSALEM. JUST
BEFOR THIS WHEN JESUS RETURNS TO EARTH. THE SATANIC-DEMONIC TRINTY WILL
BE SENT TO HELL (SATAN WILL BE IN SOME JAIL CELL IN HELL). WHILE THE 2ND
AND 3RD PART OF THE SATANIC-DEMONIC TRINITY WILL BE THE FIRST 2 PEOPLE
EVER THRONE ALIVE IN THE LAKE OF FIRE FOREVER. THE EU WORLD DICTATOR AND
THE FALSE POPE FROM THE VATICAN. WELL THE VATICAN WILL BE NUKED BY THIS
TIME SO THE FALSE POPE WILL PROBABLY IMMIGRATE TO JERUSALEM TO BE CLOSE
TO THE SATANIC DEVIL FILLED BODY OF THE EU DICTATOR. SO THEY CAN
DECEIVE THE WHOLE WORLD TILL THEY BOTH GET THROWN INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE
ALIVE. BUT SATAN IS TAKIN OUT OF THE EU LEADERS BODY. SO HE CAN BE
LOCKED IN A JAIL CELL IN HELL. SINCE AT THE END OF JESUS' 1,000 YEAR
RULE. SATAN MUST BE LOOSED FROM HELL. TO TEST ALL THE BILLIONS OF
CHILDREN BORN DURNING THAT THOUSAND YEAR RULE. TO SEE IF THEY WILL GO
WITH SATAN. OR ARE A TRUE CHRISTIAN. AND OF COURSE THE WORLDS MILLION OF
PRETENDERS WILL GO AGAINST JESUS AND JERUSALEM ONCE AGAIN. JUST LIKE AT
THE END OF THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION PERIOD. BUT THE FATHER SENDS FIRE
FROM HEAVEN ON THEM. AND THEY ARE SENT TO THE HELL VERY BRIEFLY. THIS IS
WERE SATAN IS FINALLY CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE FINAL JUDGEMENT
FOREVER. WERE 1,000 YEARS LATER THE EU LEADER AND FALSE POPE ARE STILL
BURNING AND TORMENTED BY DEMONS POSSIBLY. I'M NOT SURE IF GOD PUT ANY
DEMONS IN THE LAKE OF FIRE TO TORTURE THE EU LEADER AND THE FALSE POPE.
OR IF THE 2 WERE JUST THROWN IN THE FIRES OF THE LAKE OF FIRE FOR THE
1,000 YEARS. TILL NOW WHEN GOD THROWS HEEL AND ALL IT OCCUPANTS INTO THE
LAKE OF FIRE DEMONS AND GODLESS AND ALL THE MILLIONS OR BILLIONS THAT
WERE IN HELL.THEN AFTER THIS JESUS BRINGS THE GODLESS SINNERS EITHER ONE
AT AT TIME OR ALL TOGETHER. INDIVIDUALLY SOUNDS MORE LOGICAL. JESUS
PUTS THEIR DEAD BODY FROM THE GROUND. BACK TO LIFE. JESUS THEN INSERTS
THEIR SPIRIT FROM THE LAKE OF FIRE. BACK INTO THEIR BODY. SO EVERY ONE
BORN FROM ADAM TILL THE LAST SINNER SENT TO HELL. WILL STAND IN FRONT OF
JESUS IN JUDGEMENT. FOR THE FINAL PENITENUARY EVER LASTING FIRE AND
PUNISHMENT IN THE LAKE OF FIRE BY THEIR WORKS AND DEEDS OF EVIL.
How
Leo XIV’s Rarely-Seen Thesis Sheds Light on His Vision for the
Church-COMMENTARY: Long before his election, Pope Leo XIV was reflecting
on authority, obedience and communion. His 1987 doctoral dissertation
offers a striking preview of the leadership now unfolding.Brendan Towell
Commentaries-May 17, 2025
Before he became Pope, Leo XIV was
Augustinian Father Robert Prevost, a quiet friar studying the inner
workings of religious life. He earned a licentiate in canon law from the
Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome in
1984, followed by a doctorate in 1987. His dissertation, titled “The
Office and Authority of the Local Prior in the Order of Saint
Augustine,” may seem obscure at first glance — but it could now offer
valuable insight into the kind of pope he will be. I had the opportunity
to read Pope Leo’s dissertation thanks to the support of the Province
of St. Thomas of Villanova and the Falvey Library and Archive Team at
Villanova University. Perhaps eager to see one of their own — formed in
the Augustinian tradition — reflect on this papacy, they granted access.
Not every researcher might have been extended the same trust, and I
don’t take that lightly. I’m grateful to the Augustinian community, and I
hope this piece does justice to the richness of what I found. What
follows is a brief look at how that early work may help illuminate the
instincts and vision of the new Pope. The Quiet Authority of Pope Leo
XIV-As Pope Leo XIV becomes more familiar with his flock, so, too, do
members of the flock grow familiar with their new shepherd. Encyclicals,
apostolic exhortations, speeches and homilies will come in due time.
But even now, there are signs he carries something deeper: a theological
vision shaped by the quiet, deliberate rhythms of Augustinian life. That
vision became strikingly clear as I read the Holy Father’s
dissertation. The work does not dwell on global structures or ecclesial
politics, but on the smallest, most intimate unit of religious life: the
local community. In the details of how a prior (superior) leads his
brothers, Father Prevost lays out a theology of authority that is as
ancient as the Gospel and as urgently needed as ever. When Father Prevost
writes about the local prior, he is not merely offering commentary on
monastic leadership. He is presenting a model of governance that clearly
scales upward. The Pope’s “community” is now the universal Church. The
same principles of unity, discernment and service apply — only now on a
global stage. One of the most significant voices invoked in the
dissertation is that of Pope St. John Paul II. The longest quoted
passage in the entire work comes from a 1982 address the Polish Pope
gave to the Augustinians gathered in the chapel of their International
College in Rome. John Paul reminded them that their identity is shaped
not only by the Rule of St. Augustine but also by the juridical
foundation given to them by the Church: “Your Order ... has holy Mother
Church for the foundress of its juridic reality.”For Father Prevost,
this is not a contradiction but a convergence: The spiritual charism of
Augustine and the institutional authority of the Church together define
what it means to lead. The Pope’s exhortation — “Act in such a way that
what the Church is on a general plane ... may become true for each of
your communities” — becomes a kind of rallying cry. Authority, in this
light, is always ecclesial: received, structured and lived for the sake
of communion. At the heart of this vision is a distinctive ecclesiology —
an understanding of how the Church is structured and led. Leo XIV’s
dissertation presents a vision of the Church not as a hierarchy of
command, but as a communion of communities, bound together by authority
that is at once legal and pastoral, spiritual and
institutional.Authority as Service — Anchored in Law-One of the most
revealing moments in the dissertation comes at its close: “Primary
emphasis, throughout the entire thesis, has obviously and intentionally
been placed upon the juridical aspects of the Prior’s office and
duties.” Father Prevost is unapologetic about this focus because, for
him, the law is not a distraction from the spiritual life — it is one of
the ways that life takes concrete form.“Religious life, just as the
Church as a whole, is a reality made up of visible concrete dimensions
and spiritual, charismatic elements as well. Frequently, it is in and
through the visible dimension that the charismatic is actualized.”Law,
in this view, does not limit grace; it enables it to be lived in
community and in concrete reality. The foundational claim of the
dissertation is this: Authority in the Church is not about domination or
control, but about service and communion. As Father Prevost writes,
“The Prior’s office in the Order is not an office of power, but of
fraternal love; not of honor, but of obligation; not of domination, but
of service” (Constitutions, 15).This should not be mistaken for a vague
appeal to niceness or goodwill. Father Prevost’s vision is deeply
canonical. He grounds his arguments firmly in the Church’s legal
tradition — from the Code of Canon Law to the Constitutions of the
Augustinian Order. His leadership model conveys a clear pastoral
approach, but it is anything but improvised. He goes on to say that
authority is a “power ... received from God through the ministry of the
Church” (Canon 618) — a power to be exercised within clear boundaries,
guided by law, and directed toward the common good.So far, this offers a
distinct contrast to Pope Leo’s predecessor. While Pope Francis
emphasized synodality and pastoral discernment — often without clear
structural definitions — Father Prevost’s dissertation suggests he sees
no contradiction between synodality and structure. Discernment, he
implies, requires form. Dialogue requires rules. The superior’s role is
not to suspend the law in the name of mercy, but to interpret and apply
it with justice and love. As he writes:The discernment of God’s will and
the receiving of insights as gift from the Spirit are in no way
reserved to the superior ... it is essential that the search for or
discernment of God’s will be undertaken within a context of dialogue.
... The superior and the community which he serves must work together in
order to arrive at decisions which reflect a real cooperation with what
the plan of the divine will would be in the given situation.[Elsewhere,
he adds: It follows that the substance of the office of the superior is
to obey; to obey the will of God and to put great effort into trying to
know it, to formulate it and to specify it for his subjects.Father
Prevost conveys a clear sense in the text that he was writing during a
moment of ecclesial and cultural transition. He observes that the world
around the Church was being shaped by a rising “personalism,” often
untethered from the Church’s theology of obedience and law. “Freedom and
law are not terms which contrast with one another,” he writes. “They
are values which must be integrated with each other.”In an age
increasingly skeptical of authority — let alone authority figures —
Father Prevost insists that the Gospel does not abolish authority, but
institutes it. “Authority is placed at the service of the good of others
… not … because it is derived from the community, but because it is
received from above for governing and judging.”This framework reflects a
trust in local initiative (what the Church calls subsidiarity),
tempered by the Pope’s responsibility to ensure unity and care for the
whole Church — a balance long held as essential to ecclesial governance.
This dual commitment of decentralized attentiveness and centralized
guardianship appears to be a hallmark of the ecclesiology Father Prevost
articulates here. The Spiritual Shape of Leadership-If this emphasis on
law and governance seems abstract, Father Prevost grounds it firmly in
the notion of relationship. “Authority is relational,” he writes. “It
would be useless to appoint a man to the office of Prior if there will
not be the possibility for a good relationship between him and the other
members of the community.” Law, in his view, is never impersonal; it
bears fruit only when authority is exercised within real human
relationships — marked by trust, listening and mutual service.Father
Prevost’s dissertation is therefore not dry canon law. It is steeped in
pastoral concern. Time and again, he returns to the conviction that
leadership must be grounded in love, expressed through listening, and
oriented toward unity. “The superior is expected to be a living witness
to the love of God offered freely and generously to the community,” he
writes. This is more than good management; it is closer to spiritual
fatherhood. For Father Prevost, the task of a leader is to model Jesus
Christ, to build community, and to nurture vocations to holiness in the
midst of ordinary life. He calls it an “ecclesial ministry,” recognizing
that even the smallest act of local leadership participates in the
Church’s universal mission.I met Father Prevost in 2010, when he was
still serving as prior general of the Order of St. Augustine. I was
struck by the same combination of simplicity and interior conviction
that now animates his papal vision — qualities already visible in his
1987 dissertation. He didn’t fill the room with charisma; he filled it
with steadiness, attention and clarity. These are not qualities that
trend — but they are qualities that endure. From Local Prior to Universal
Pastor-The ecclesiology Leo XIV sets forth in this early work affirms
that the Church, at every level, is more than a bureaucracy or social
movement. It is the Body of Christ, animated by the Holy Spirit and
governed through structures that serve communion. His theological
imagination links the local and the universal, showing that the Church’s
health depends on grassroots vitality and on the unifying role of the
Petrine office. Now, as the Successor of St. Peter and Vicar of Christ,
Leo holds the highest office of visible authority in the Church. His
decisions will likely feel less like top-down mandates and more like
discernments made in consultation with others. This is a style of
leadership that some will likely describe as “synodal” — though not in
the looser, open-ended sense the term has often taken on in recent
years.Rather, this version of synodality is likely to resemble ordered
collaboration, not open-ended experimentation. In the dissertation, the
superior is described as “the principle of unity for the community” — a
figure who listens, yes, but who also exercises authority with
integrity. In this vision, the Church is not a debating society but a
body bound together in a shared mission, guided by divine Revelation and
the grace of God.What the Bibliography Reveals-For readers with a more
technical eye, the bibliography is telling. It is rich with canonical,
historical and theological sources, reflecting a scholar working at the
intersection of tradition and reform. Several points stand out:Legal
Precision. References to the 1917 and 1983 Codes of Canon Law, canonical
commentaries and proceedings show that Father Prevost takes the
Church’s juridical structure seriously. These sources are not
afterthoughts — they are theologically central. His bibliography
includes major 20th-century canonists such as Cappello, Beyer, Woestman,
Wernz, Vidal, Orsy and Andrés Gutíerrez.Augustinian Roots. With
multiple works on the Rule of St. Augustine, the Augustinian
Constitutions, and the order’s history, the bibliography reveals how
deeply his vision is shaped by the ideal of fraternal community and
authority as a form of service.Postconciliar Engagement. Extensive
references to Vatican II documents and to theologians such as Yves
Congar reflect a commitment to the Council’s renewal — not as a rupture
with the past, but as a work of organic development.Historical Depth.
The inclusion of patristic and medieval sources — such as the Patrologia
Latina, Suarez and Tierney — points to a scholar who interprets the
Church’s present through the wisdom of her past.In sum, the sources
suggest a pope whose ecclesiology is canonical, spiritual and
historically grounded — a pastor-scholar who governs not with slogans,
but with structure and vision. His dissertation draws on a wide range of
canonical thinkers — some deeply traditional, others shaped by the
aggiornamento of Vatican II — signaling a legal mind both rooted and
responsive, not beholden to any single school or ideology.A Pope for
This Moment-Many Catholics today are asking: Will this new Pope offer
clarity where confusion has crept in? Will he restore trust where it has
been shaken? Leo XIV’s dissertation, far from abstract, speaks directly
to this moment. It reveals a leader who values dialogue, but not
disorder; consultation, but not confusion. He leads with a steady hand
and a heart formed by law, prayer and community. While Pope Leo XIV’s
pontificate is only just beginning, his early writing reflects a deep
regard for many of the things Catholics today long for: a Church that
listens, a shepherd who walks with his people, and a vision of
leadership that doesn't silence the faithful but draws them into deeper
communion. Yet unlike the freer forms of synodality seen in recent
years, Leo XIV’s approach appears more juridically defined and firmly
anchored. His emphasis on respecting the agency of local communities
should not be mistaken for disengagement. Rather, it reflects a
confidence in the Mystical Body of Christ — one that is never divorced
from the broader obligations of the papal office. The local and the
global are held together not in tension, but in mutual service. As he
states in the “Introduction” section of the dissertation: “The struggle
to find the best way to live authority and obedience in religious life
is not over.” It certainly isn’t — and under Leo XIV, that struggle may
take a more ordered, canonical shape: one that trusts the law of the
Church as a gift, not a hindrance. The Friar in White-The white cassock
of the papacy may be new, but the heart beneath it is familiar. It is
the restless heart of an Augustinian priest who has spent his life
thinking and praying about how best to serve Christ and the People of
God. As his dissertation makes clear, the authority Pope Leo XIV now
holds will not be shaped by ambition, but by the cross; not by conquest,
but by community. Nor will it be improvised. It will be exercised
firmly, clearly, and with love.This is not a hunch — it’s a
confirmation. His dissertation doesn’t upend expectations — it affirms
them. Here is a Pope who sees leadership as ordered grace, who values
law not for control but for communion, and who believes deeply in the
strength of quiet, faithful service. Perhaps that’s precisely what the
Church needs now: not a revolution, but a return — to clarity, to
charity, and to the wisdom of a simple friar who knows how to lead by
serving.

The pope recently offered to host leaders from Russia and Ukraine at the

with the pope is also notable because Leo has shared criticism of the
vice president’s stance on immigration in the past.In February, he
shared an opinion article that criticized Vance on X with the headline,
“JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.”
He also shared an article with the headline “Pope Francis’ letter, JD
Vance’s ‘ordo amoris’ and what the Gospel asks of all of us on
immigration.”Vance has received criticism from other Catholics over his
stance on migrants and his comments that Christians love their families,
neighbors and fellow citizens before the rest of the world.

Press-Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural Mass is filled with symbolism. Here’s
what you need to know-GIOVANNA DELL'ORTO-Sun, May 18, 2025 at 1:00 a.m.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Leo XIV ’s inaugural Mass
on Sunday morning in St. Peter’s Square and Basilica is a ritual filled
with symbolism that connects back to Peter, Jesus’ apostle, and his
special mission as head of the Catholic Church. No new role is conferred —
the pontiff is already the head of the Vatican and of the faith
counting some 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, tens of thousands of whom
gathered in the square for the Mass alongside government
representatives.Leo will receive two crucial signs of his pontificate,
the “pallium” and the fisherman’s ring, marking his role as successor of
Peter. Here’s what to know about them and more rituals in the solemn
liturgy replete with ancient languages and Scriptural references – all
after Leo takes a spin around the square in the popemobile. What’s the
inauguration Mass? In most parts, it’s a celebration of the Eucharist
just like any Sunday Mass held in Catholic churches around the
world. There will be prayers, music, readings from the New Testament, a
homily and Communion, all in the usual order. Symbolism is interwoven
even in some of the typical aspects, though. The Gospel passage, for
instance, will focus on Jesus giving Peter responsibility as the
shepherd of the church — a reference Leo made in his first public words
the day he was elected. It will be proclaimed first in Latin and then in
Greek. As the main languages of the nascent church 2,000 years ago,
today they signify “the church’s attempt to reach everyone” and be
universal, said the Rev. Giuseppe Midili, a professor and consultant
with the Vatican's liturgy office. In a more personal touch, the Vatican
says that by the outdoor altar there will be an image of the Mother of
Good Counsel — an icon of Mary from a sanctuary in a small village
outside Rome served by Augustinians, Leo’s religious order. The signs of
Peter — a vestment and a ring-Two of the most significant moments will
be right before the homily, when cardinals will give Leo the pallium and
his fisherman’s ring. The pallium is a narrow stole-like vestment with
two pendants to be worn across the shoulders, decorated with crosses
representing Jesus’ wounds. It’s made of white wool in an elaborate
procedure where the lambs traditionally were blessed before being
sheared, just like for the similar vestments given to archbishops on
their ordination.“It’s the symbolism of the good shepherd who carries
the sheep on his shoulders,” Midili said.“Pastor” means shepherd in
Latin and Scriptures often refer to the good shepherd who gives his life
for his flock, a reference to the crucifixion of Jesus, and of Peter,
who was martyred. Leo will receive it from Cardinal Dominique Mamberti,
who told the world the new pope’s name on May 8.The fisherman’s ring
recalls the Gospel passage where Jesus appeared to the apostles after
his resurrection as they had spent a night fishing with no catch. He
told Peter to cast in a specific spot— and the nets strained with lots
of large fish, some of which the apostles then shared with Jesus in a
lakeside breakfast. An image of Peter with the net, standing for the
church’s evangelization mission and its unity, is engraved on the ring
alongside the pope’s name. When a pope dies, the ring is crossed over so
it can no longer be used as seal for papal documents. Cardinal Luis
Tagle of the Philippines, who was widely regarded as a papal contender,
will present Leo with the ring.At the beginning of the celebration, both
ring and pallium are taken from the chapel of St. Peter’s tomb,
underneath the Basilica — where the pope prays accompanied by the
patriarchs of eastern rite Catholic churches — out to the altar set up
in St. Peter’s Square.Meet and greet, from the faithful to world
leaders-Just after the giving of those two insignia, a delegation
representing different roles in the church, from cardinals to the
faithful, including a married couple, will greet Leo in the “rite of
obedience” that symbolizes the church turning to the new pontiff to
follow his guidance. After Mass, Leo will greet the government
representatives, royalty and religious delegations.U.S. Vice President
JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both Catholics representing
an administration that often sparred with Pope Francis, are scheduled
to attend Mass for the first U.S. pope. Also expected at Mass, according
to the Vatican, are more than 20 heads of state including Italy’s
president, Sergio Mattarella, and Premier Giorgia Meloni, as well as
Dina Boluarte, the president of Peru, where Leo has citizenship and
spent many years as missionary and bishop. The presidents of two
countries involved in wars that Leo mentioned in his first Sunday
blessing are also on the list — Israel’s Isaac Herzog and Ukraine’s
Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The king and queen of Spain are planning to attend
alongside other royalty from Europe and as well as Gulf kingdoms
including Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi of the United Arab
Emirates.___Associated Press religion coverage receives support through

XIV vows to work for unity, make Catholic Church symbol of world
peace-In historic inaugural Mass, first American pope signals shift with
call for unity and peace, traditionalist tone — but offers prayers only

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Leo XIV, history’s first American
pope, vowed Sunday to work for unity so that the Catholic Church becomes
a symbol of peace in the world, offering a message of communion during
an inaugural Mass in St. Peter’s Square before an estimated 200,000
pilgrims, presidents, patriarchs and princes.Leo officially opened his
pontificate by taking his first popemobile tour through the piazza, a
rite of passage that has become synonymous with the papacy’s global
reach and mediatic draw. The 69-year-old Augustinian missionary smiled
and waved from the back of the truck, and stopped to bless some babies
in the crowd.During the Mass, Leo appeared to choke up when the two
potent symbols of the papacy were placed on him — the lambswool stole
over his shoulders and the fisherman’s ring on his finger — as if the
weight of responsibility of leading the 1.4-billion strong church had
just sunk in.He turned his hand to look at the ring and then clasped his
hands in front of him in prayer.US Vice President JD Vance, one of the
last foreign officials to see Pope Francis before he died, led the US
delegation honoring the Chicago-born Leo. Vance paid his respects at the
Argentine pope’s tomb after arriving in Rome late Saturday. The theme of
Leo’s papacy-In his homily, Leo said he wanted to be a servant to the
faithful through the two dimensions of the papacy, love and unity, so
that the church could be a force for peace in the world.“I would like
that our first great desire be for a united church, a sign of unity and
communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled world,” he said. “In
this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by
hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic
paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the
poorest.”The statue of St. Peter holding keys on the Bernini Colonnade

Leo XIV’s pontificate, in St. Peter’s Square, at the Vatican, Sunday,
May 18, 2025. (AP Photo/Stefano Costantino)His call for unity was
significant, given the polarization in the Catholic Church in the United
States and beyond.Francis’s radical 12-year pontificate, which
emphasized care for the poor and marginalized and disdain for the
capitalist economic system, often alienated conservatives who begged for
a new pope who could pacify divisions. Leo’s May 8 election, after a
remarkably quick 24-hour conclave, appears to have pleased conservative
Catholics who seem to appreciate his more disciplined, traditional style
and Augustinian background, emphasizing core truths of Catholic
doctrine.Leo drove that message home by wearing the formal red cape of
the papacy, or mozzetta, to receive Vance and official government
delegations after the Mass. Francis had eschewed many of the formalities
of the papacy as part of his simple style, but Leo’s return to the
traditional garb has pleased conservatives and traditionalists who
cheered when he came out onto the loggia wearing the red cape on May
8.Leo did though break protocol when he gave his older brother, Louis
Prevost, a self-described political “MAGA-type,” a bear hug in the
basilica when he and his wife came up to greet the pope.“Let us build a
church founded on God’s love, a sign of unity, a missionary church that
opens its arms to the world, proclaims the word, allows itself to be
made restless by history, and becomes a leaven of harmony for humanity,”
Leo said, referencing some of the themes of Francis’s pontificate as
well.Tight security and protocol-Strict diplomatic protocol dictated the
seating arrangements at the inaugural Mass, with both the United States
and Peru getting front-row seats thanks to Leo’s dual citizenship.
Vance, a Catholic convert who tangled with Francis over the Trump
administration’s mass migrant deportation plans, was joined by US
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who arrived in Rome ahead of time to try
to advance Russia-Ukraine peace talks.Peruvian President Dina Boluarte
was one of around a dozen heads of state who attended, as well as
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russia had planned to send its
culture minister but was represented by its ambassador, reports
said.Diplomatic protocol also dictated the dress code: While most wore
black, the handful of Catholic queens and princesses — Letizia of Spain
and Charlene of Monaco among others — wore white in a special privilege
allowed them. Three dozen of the world’s other Christian churches sent
their own delegations, the Jewish community had a 13-member delegation,
half of them rabbis. Other representatives headed Buddhist, Muslim,
Zoroastrian, Hindu, Sikh and Jain delegations.Security was tight, as it
was for Francis’ funeral on April 26, which drew an estimated 250,000
people. The Vatican said 200,000 were on hand Sunday in the piazza and
surrounding streets, parks and piazzas, where giant television screens
and portable toilets were set up.At the end of the Mass, Leo expressed
hope for negotiations to bring a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine and
offered prayers for the people of Gaza — children, families and elderly
who are “reduced to starvation,” he said. Leo made no mention of
hostages taken by Hamas from southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, as Francis
usually did when praying for Gaza.Zelenskyy, who later had a formal
audience with Leo, thanked him for his words in a post on X.Americans
are rejoicing-Susan Hanssen, a professor who was born in Chicago and
just arrived in Rome to teach, said she thought Leo’s homily of unity
would resonate in the US and beyond. “I think he will inspire,” she said
after Mass. “What I particularly loved was the phrasing, unity within
the doctrine of the faith, and then in love.”US seminarian Ethan
Menning, 21, from Omaha, Nebraska, wrapped himself in an American flag,
purchased at a truck stop in Iowa, to celebrate.“Rome always felt like
home for a Catholic, but now coming here and seeing one of our own on
the throne of Peter … it almost makes Jesus himself more accessible,” he
said. The two symbols of the papacy handed to Leo were the pallium stole
and the fisherman’s ring. The pallium, draped across his shoulders,
symbolizes the pastor carrying his flock as the pope carries the
faithful. The ring, which becomes Leo’s official seal, harks back to
Jesus’ call to the apostle Peter to cast his fishing nets. The other
symbolically important moment of the Mass was the representational rite
of obedience to Leo, performed by cardinals, bishops, priests, deacons,
nuns, a Peruvian married couple and two young people.Gregory and Susan
Hudak, who lived for 40 years in the Chicago area, found themselves in
Rome after booking a trip in February, with just a faint hope of perhaps
glimpsing the pope. Seeing the popemobile pass by in front of them,
with the Chicago-born Leo on board, was even better than watching
Michael Jordan play, said Gary Hudak, a former altar boy wearing a
Chicago Bears hat.“Originally, the only hope I had coming here was to
see the inside of the Sistine Chapel,” he said. “Seeing the pope was not
scheduled, it was a long-shot hope. And this was a treasure, simple as
that.”
